Having my screws taken out AT LAST! - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi to all my fusion buddies! If any of you are still around I am finally having those darn screws taken out this Friday, May 5th. It has been 17 months or so since my fusion and I cannot wear anything but flip flops because the screws stick out so far and they rub on everything...........not to mention they are sitting on a nerve.......agh!!!!!!!!
Doc says its a peice of cake compared to what I went through with the fusion..........I am actually looking forward to it so I can wear real shoes again! I will let you know how it goes Friday! hope you are all doing well!

Hello dlh,
I had my plate and 5 screws removed on the 13th of April (fusion was July '05). He found a crack in the bone under the plate and another crack toward the end of my toe where the plate was rubbing. Now I have external fixation for around 6 weeks total with NWB. Should be home free from here though. Now we know why my toe was still swelling and turning red...I'd asked the boards about that a few months ago. Hope yours is a great solution too. Great to hear from you again.

Sharon, I read your post about the crack, good thing you had that taken out.........wow! I sure hope you are on your way to a full healing this time. I dont know if you remember but my plate actually moved and a screw came loose only one week after my first fusion.............I was happy my Dr did an X Ray at my 1 week visit or who knows what would have happened. So he took it all out the next day and put in the screws..........I think I would have rather had the external crap like you, then I wouldnt have to go through yet another surgery! LOL! Hang in there and get well!
