mortons neuroma

I have a neuroma on my foot, between the fourth and fifth toe.
I have been to see a Foot Specialist (orthopaedic) but his details were not very satisfactory about the operation (made me feel that since I can walk what/why am I bothered!!), the recovery, and the time off for rehab.etc ?

I saw where others have had a similar problem and would like to know how satisfactory the op was, and if it was worth all the bother. Also, any problems now with the foot? I already do have orthodics. My main bother comes when playing sport and moving on the ball of the foot for takeoff continually.

Re: moretons neuroma

Are you seeing a sports med ortho? Since this is typically a sports injury, they seem to take a better approach towards getting you back in action...mine did, anyway.

There really isn't any "downtime" with this other than day of surgery. Had a walking boot so could get around. I went back to work the next day, sutures out at two weeks and then just healing process. It isn't linear - in other words, you don't get progressively better each day. It will get better, then a little worse, and back and forth for a year or so. I wore Merrell shoes for about 6 weeks after and then slowly worked my way back into regular shoes...in heels after about 3 months. Hope this helps.

Re: mortons neuroma

Thanks for your info about the op. I played tennis today and after about 1.5hrs moving about on the hard court surface my neuroma really gives me curry.
Are you saying, even if I have the op, it may still give me a problem for some time? What weeks or years? The Specialist sort of indicated a time frame of 12 weeks which seemed a bit excessive, as it is supposed to be a relatively simple procedure? I guess there is the scar tissue and mending to happen too...so maybe 12 weeks could be the time frame before getting back onto the court?

I am not young, and am trying to weigh up the situation...as I am still fairly active - God willing of course.

Anything else to say that might help me make up my mind.. if I am going to have this done I want to make up my mind and get it over with preferably before the end of the year so I have the Christmas break to do the rehab work.
Thanks

Re: mortons neuroma

OK, sorry that I misled you. There is no rehab needed. As for the healing taking 12 months or more I mean to have absolutely no tingles, swelling, etc.
You'll probably be able to play tennis within 4-6 weeks. The incision is on the top of the foot. Hope this makes more sense.

Re: mortons neuroma

Hi Titchou

I went back to the old posts on neuroma surgery and ran across this one that seems similiar to one of my concerns. You seem to be one of the more knowledgable ones on the board so I thought I would pick your brain.

I had the neuroma removal surgery on left foot from the top of the foot done on May 30th along with hammertoe surgery on right. I went for my 3rd post-op visit yesterday and my pod says everything is healing up nicely and I should be out of the boots in 2 or 3 weeks. The stitches came out last week which was 10 days post-op. No swelling and very little pain due to diligent icing and elevating the first 36 hrs.

I am still experiencing a bit of a bunched up sock feeling in my foot. I am assuming that it is because the incision is still in the healing process. I was told that the entire healing process would take up to a year and that by 3 months my foot should start feeling more "normal"

My question to you..did you experience any of that annoying bunched up sock feeling or any other kind of weird feeling following surgery, and if so how long before it subsided for you ?

Thanks

Sharon
