Can bunions go away on their own? - Foot Problems Message Board

This is probably a very naive question, I don't know much about bunions, but can they go away or fix themselves on their own? I started getting pain in my big toe joint about four months ago. I went to the doctor and he x-rayed it and said everything looked fine, that maybe it's a form of arthritis (I'm 33). That was back in April. But in the past couple of weeks I noticed that the joint is starting to stick out just a bit compared to my right foot. I'm sure it wasn't like that before. So, if I am developing a bunion it is probably in the early stages - so is there anything I can do to reverse it or stop it from getting worse?

I have not heard of bunions reversing but you can stop it from getting worse with proper footwear, perhaps orthotics. I would visit a reputable podiatrist for advice on your particular case. Bring a copy of your xray with you. He may fit you with an orthotic or make other recommendations. For example I have seen those toe spacers -- I plan to ask my surgeon if those are helpful in maintaining the big toe alignment.

I am three weeks post bunion on my right foot. The left foot has a small nonpainful bunion and I would like to keep it small!
