Hi all, I'm 41 yr old male that just went thru straightning of my second toe on both feet. My surgery was on the 18th of sept., basically what they did was cut a wedge shape piece of bone out so that the top bone would move into a more natural position above the middle bone in the toe. Then they inserted a pin thru the middle of my toe that is probly a good inch long inside and sticks out the end of my toe about a quarter inch. I had some discomfort the first week- just felt like I had something sticking out hte end of my toe ( more of a nuscence pain) but wasnt that bad, Now after the second week I dont even now the pins are there except for an occasional shooting pain or tinggling sensations that doesnt last for very long- I never take any pain medication for it except for the first day after the surgery but dont need any since then. The pins will probly remain for about another 3 week maybe 4 at most.
Some other things I do to help is I wear the special shoes they gave me almost all the time- even when I sleep. And I also prop my feet up on some pillows at night also just to keep me from pushing or hitting the pins on anything.
Things they told me to watch for as far as infection are-fever,chill,temp above 101 degrees, red or purple marks on top of my foot or lower leg area, swelling or pain in calf excesive drainage from insions or pin area.
Hope this helps, good luck with everyones recovery
