2 weeks post-op Bunionectomy update - Foot Problems Message Board

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to report back and let you know how my 1st post-op appointment went today. I finally got to see my foot for the first time since my surgery! I was a bit shocked once they removed the dressings to see the pin sticking out of my foot and the incision site. I was not as swollen as I imagined I would be and the removal of the stitches was not that bad at all. If anything, it just stung a little bit when they pulled them out.

I guess I'm healing quite well, and I am scheduled to be back in two more weeks to remove the pin. The attending Doc. said that removing the stitches was more painful than removing the pin...kind of hard for me to believe, but I'll post about that experience once I'm through with it. I'm just so happy that it's been 2 full weeks now since the surgery. It feels like a little milestone.

It seems that I still am a little weak and get tired easily, but I definitely am gaining some of my strength back. Work is not as difficult in that I'm not in as much pain. I'm still on crutches for another 4 weeks and then after that we'll see how I'm doing. I'm not sure if I'll be in a walking cast or just a soft shoe at that point.

Hi Christina - glad to hear you are doing so well. Believe it or not taking the stitches out did hurt more than getting the pin out. I guess because the pin is down into the bone there aren't any nerve endings there so it doesn't hurt to come out. And really the stitches just pulled a little - did not really hurt.

I kept thinking I was going to go from crutches and a rocker boot to the velcro shoe but the dr put me right into sneakers (after 8 weeks). Of course the first day in the sneaker was a little tight but after that each day got remarkably better. I'm 12 weeks now and except for a little ankle swelling I think I'm doing great. No pain at all. I really haven't done a lot of walking (like the mall which I will do tomorrow night) but I've been back to my health club and did walk the treadmill.

Keep up the good work - there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is not the train coming to hit you LOL.
