shooting pain in toe

To start off long story short, I hurt my toes about 7 months ago, i feel down some stairs and they bent upward, to the point I didn't know they could go. About a 1.5 months later they(2 middle ones) were very sore and swollen underneath. I got a cortisone shot and it helped, no more pain. About a 2 weeks ago out of no where i tak e off my shoes shoes and get zapped in toe.
Now I have gone to the Doctor and he kinda looked at me crazy and didnt know what to make of the zapping. It only happens when i walk, there is no swelling, redness or tenderness. I can move my toe, bend it, just cant walk on it. the only thing he pointed out was a clicking noise and feeling. Its the first time i have stumped a doctor. He is sending me for an ultrasound. on the order it has in doctor scratch something like, Neurtosis?? any ideas or I am just odd? LOL

Re: shooting pain in toe

Jen,
It sure sounds like a Mortons Neuroma. The clicking is a dead giveaway. If you can find a very good Pod or ortho surgeon. Most of the time you will need surgery to remove it. Do not have a ligament release, even if your doc says it might work. the ligament hold the foot together at the top for a reason. I had it done as did a lot of others on this list. I don't know of anyone who would have it done again. Hope it helps. Keep us posted as to what happens.

Now what are the chances that this clears up on its own? Is surgrey always needed? I gonna do some more research on it but i like to know who others have done with similar problems, again Thanks for the feed back.

Re: shooting pain in toe

Jen,
A neuroma doesn't get better by itself. Some people get alcohol shots to see if it will kill the nerve. It didn't work for me. I also had cortisone shots, but t wasn't to kill the nerve, it was to get me thru the pain. I had surgery thru the bottom of the foot. Recovery takes longer this way, but mine was big and doc wanted to be able to implant the 2 ends of the nerves into health muscle so it doesn't
grow back. Other have had the surgery thru the top, and their recovery is much faster. Do not get a ligament cut to make it better. I don't know of anyone here that had it and were happy. It doesn't work, even when the doc says that it will. if he suggest it don't go for it. When the time comes, let everyone here know and you will get a lot of very good advice. You will also find that we all have similar experiences in some of the treatment. Hope this helps.
Mary

Re: shooting pain in toe

I second everything Mary says...she and I are on the same wavelength. My experience is that removal was easy - done from the top, I was back at work the next day. Get good references on your doc!
