Bunion Surgery Question - Foot Problems Message Board

I'm new to these boards and couldn't figure out how to start a new thread and posted to one about toes - so sorry for the wrong posting.

I had foot surgery last July as I injured my foot and had 2 severly dislocated toes - the 2 next to the big toe. The 2 on the end were injured but the nails do not grow out and are very dark. The poditrist said that it was because of injury. I had the 2 toes straightened, no pins and a bunionectomy on the big toe. Now the 2 middle toes are straight but won't go down - they are shrunk up and so now I still have a hard callous underneath which I always have to cut or rub down to be able to walk comfortably. The big toe still wants to go sideways and is not straight. The poditrist wanted me to tape down the toes and wear a cloth brace to pull the toe over....which I did for about 3 months but now the tape bothers me and the cloth brace is annoying. Shouldn't the surgery have corrected this?

Now I'm wondering if this podistrist knew what he was doing.

I think you might have what is called a cock-up deformity this is what makes you toes appear to be straight up.

It is possible to find shoes that are comftorable although can be hard.

The only other thing that was suggested to me was surgery to correct the deformity.

It seems like whenever you have a surgery on the foot/toes there is some sort of risk involved for further problems. I know someone who had good feet except for a tendon that needed cut to help her toe lie flat. She had the procedure done and now has a hammertoe forming on the joint that was operated on. Ive heard of many many cases where surgery has been done and something else has occured. I too can relate to that myself. Ive had many major and minor foot surgeries done and I do remember when Dr.s attempted to remove bunions and my big toe went in towards my second toe after the surgery was done. Im not sure what that is called but it seems to happen after bunionectomies. In Dec. I had a sesamoid bone removed in attempt to relieve pain from a severe hammertoe (in big toe) but now the hammer toe is worse....opps....wrong choice. Hope this helps!
