advise in pain meds after surgery - Foot Problems Message Board

I'm having The Bromstrom along with Arthoscopy on the 25th. What can I expect in pain. I've had children and nothing is that painful. But, I'm sure a couple of advil won't do the trick huh?? How long will I need to be on pain meds? I plan on following all the Dr's rules. The pain aspect has me worried.

I assume you're talking about ankle reconstruction. I've had it done twice and it's very painful. Ankle surgery, even scopes just hurt. Advil will not cut it. You'll most likely find out what you're getting for pain meds at your pre-op appointment. The first time I had the surgery I was given Percocets. The second time I was given Lortab. The second doc was not very good at pain control. I had my 5th surgery on this ankle a couple weeks ago and was given Percocets by my Podiatrist. How long you'll need to be on pain meds depends on your own pain tolerance and how good you are at keeping your foot elevated. The first couple of days after your surgery take the pain killers as prescribed whether you think you need them or not. Trying to catch up after the fact is difficult.

What side effects did you experience from Percoset?

This is what my POD prescribed for me but haven't had the surgery as yet.

The only side effect I had was the reduction of pain. I have no problem with them at all. They can cause constipation so drink plenty of water and get some stool softeners and/or laxatives just in case. All meds, even over-the-counter stuff, can have side effects. Everyone reacts differently.
