Anyone ever hear of this practice before?

Brief history: July 20th 2007 I fractured my left calcaneus. Had ORIF, plate and screws installed. Lot of pain meds that either made me sick or didn’t help.

OK here’s today’s event. Just got home from the doctor. I went in couple weeks early from my scheduled appointment cause my incision has a large gap in it that has not closed yet and was causing my a lot of discomfort so I had it looked at in case it was infected? The PA confirmed no infection then the doctor walked in and saw my foot hanging just off the exam table and proclaimed just how wonderful her work looked and with a big grin on her face grabbed my foot like she was wrestling and alligator and pushed, pulled and twisted it like her life depended on it! Dammed near killed my in the process as I begged her to stop. I swear if she wasn’t a woman I would have decked her! Man did that hurt!
Afterwards she asked am I still having throbbing pain and sleepless nights? I just looked at her with contempt and ask does Dolly Parton sleep on her back? So she writes me another scrip for Amitriptyline HCL and said don’t worry this is for depression but we are not treating depression we are treating your pain.
Anyone ever hear of this practice before? This makes no sense to me.

Yes, I have heard of amitriptyline used for chronic pain, it is used for neuropathic pain originating from the nervous system. The dose is usually less than that used for depression.

Re: Anyone ever hear of this practice before?

Sounds to me like you have a Dr that has a pretty rotten bedside manner... I used to have a surgeon like that... "You look maaahvalous" after every surgery, then the grab and twist.

Basically, your Dr prescribed something for nerve pain, assuming that your nerves are irritated and sending too many signals of pain for the physical condition. I would suggest giving the pills an honest try... regular pain killers seem to make you more misserable... but if they don't work call in and demand to see a pain management specialist.

I would also reccomend making ice your best friend... (I am unable to take any narcotic pain relievers and many OTC are not allowed for me, leaving me ice or nothing)

Good luck and I hope that things settle down for you quickly

Hi Dale
I take Amitriptyline every night to help me sleep. I have a lot of pain from an ankle fusion, arthritis and fibro. The medication helps me relax and sleep 8 hours. I asked my doctor if I could stop taking it because I was concerned about becoming addicted. She said I would not be able to sleep because of the pain. She also told me that it is a very safe drug that is prescribed for various reasons. I hope the medication is helping you and that you are sleeping well. Take care.

Re: Anyone ever hear of this practice before?

Yes I've just started on those. I've been having weird shock like feelings after a bad ankle injury 12 weeks ago. I'm going to give em a go and see what happens. Good luck.
