Dale,
You'll need to check with your state about disability insurance. In California the law grants up to 52 weeks of disability insurance (which I have been on with my surgery - tendon repair, bone graft). Beyond that, at least in California, the only other option is to apply for permanent disability or to re-train for a different career.
I understand where you're coming from as far as not being able to be on your feet. My current job requires me to be on my feet (on a cement floor) for 8+ hours per day. Right now I can't even imagine how I could ever go back to that type of working environment. It's simply inconceivable! I have a little bit of time left on my disability claim, but after that I'm afraid I'll be in the market for a new job.
Good luck to you,
Deb
