Unsuccessful foot surgery - Foot Problems Message Board

In late November of 2001 I had a bunionecomy and two osteotomies (shortening of the toe) on my left big toe and second toe. The reason for the surgery was that all of the weight of my body was being carried on the second metatarsel of the second toe and I had a jabbing pain on the ball of my foot with each step. The podiatrist thought the surgery would readjust this. HE WAS WRONG!! The bunion is gone, however, the pain is even greater under my second toe on the ball of my foot. I feel like I am stepping on a nail each time I walk and I am only able to wear heavy soled tennis shoes. Has anyone ever had such a problem? The doctor says only more surgery can heal it or orthodics. The new orthodics I got don't ease the pain. Plus now I have a bulging disc on L5 because my back is so weakened after keeping my foot up for many months while healing. Please pass any info along to me that could help. Thank you!

i also had the same type of procedures. i did have pain in my 2nd toe for some time following the surgery and eventually had another doctor to go back in to ease the pain. it has been approx 5 years now and i hardly ever have pain now. did you have pins put in your 2nd toe or not? i am supposed to have surgery again next week on another toe, but will not have a pin used this time.
