When do you know you're ready to be fit for orthotics? I am 9 weeks post-op from bunion and Morton Neuroma surgery. My Dr. said I will need orthotics, but can they get a good fit if the foot is still swollen?
Most likely not. The custom orthotics are usually made by making a plaster cast of your foot. For the best results, you should wait until you have very minimal swelling, have full range of motion, and are able to put full weight on your foot.
You really need to allow your foot to both fully heal, and then "reform" itself into it's final shape before you can fit orthotics. Case in point, 4 months after a plantar fasciotomy my Podiatrist figured out the source of my pain on the outside edge of my foot was from the lesser than 1 year old custom orthotics as the shape of my foot changed slightly. I had to have new orthotics made and problem was solved.
