MY BIG TOE - Foot Problems Message Board

Directly under my big toe on the inside of my foot on both feet the bone seems to protrude more than normal.It's about the size of a golf ball My father has the same thing and was told the only way to correct the pain in that area was to surgically scrap down the bone to a "normal" size. Does this have a name and would i benefit from the surgery?

from your discription, it sounds like it could possibly be a bunion. do a search on google using the keywords "bunion before after" and you'll be linked to some sights with before and after surgery pictures of bunion - hope that helps you figure if you do or don't have bunions. i'll warn you, some of the pictures are pretty ugly, where toes start to cross over. but there are some that are "moderate" bunions and don't look too bab. anyhow, a lot of us are going through bunonectomies (bunion surgery) right now or in the recovery process.....so you can read our stories on several of the postings. i'm post-op day 28 right now.

Does sound like a bunion, it is from wearing shoes that don't fit properly and after wearing shoes (that don't fit right) for long periods of time the foot will try to take on the shape of the shoe. Soaking in warm water can temporary relief the pain,but not much else can be done. Both of my sisters went through the surgery and they have never had any problems since.....Hope that helps

This is underneath the sin seems like more of a bone problem aren't bunions on the outside skin?

bunions are bone problems....the bone develops into a deformity, usually resulting in a "bump" and in some cases causes the toe to point laterally (and additionally may cross over/under the other toes) the bump part of the bone is often cut/shaved off. and depending on what type of surgery is required, the metatarsal bone may be cut and realigned with pins or screws.

if you go to the topic entitled "Should I get the bunion surgery??? " which was started by GirlWonder, someone posted a picture of their foot/bunion. i've also left a post with info to where you can see photos of my bunions - pre-surgery and post surgery.

or else you could go to a podiatrist and ask the doctor directly what your condition is called. that might be the quickest (and accurate) way to be diagnosed.
