Lightbulb Could it be a Lisfranc fracture??

Hi. Posted earlier trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with my foot. Extreme pain on top. Hurts so bad I cry when I take shoe off. I'm limping on opposite side. It's my left foot that hurts. It's been bad for about a month or month and 1/2.

I don't remember any specific injury. I have a new job I started a year ago. On my feet almost all 8 hours doing lots of walking and some heavy lifting.

Saw family dr. last week. He did xray and my foot showed beginning arthritis but he could not see a stress frac. which is what he suspected it to be.

I get MRI on Monday and see foot specialist on Thursday. I can hardly wait. I read a lot of posts on this site and so many of my symptoms seem like a Lisfranc fracture. Of course I'm no doc, so it could be muscle or tendon.

I just went outside a second ago to take a picture of my son. I was just walking along (in shoes) and it "caught". I must have grimaced in pain cause hubby ran over asking what was wrong. That's the kind of thing that happens all day. Some days I just want to sit down and bawl. UGH!

Has anyone here had a Lisfranc frac. that would care to share their symptoms/treatment/recovery with me? I'd love to hear!

Thanks,
lynn40

Re: Could it be a Lisfranc fracture??

Hey Lynn,

I suffered a Lisfranc fracture on July 11 of this year while playing racquetball. It was definitely an "event" - nothing subtle about it at all. When it happened, I knew it was a serious issue. I ended up needing surgery, and now have two screws that will likely be permanent.

From what I understand, Lisfranc is the result of a traumatic event. I'm thinking that if you don't remember incurring an injury, this is probably not your diagnosis.

Good luck!

Re: Could it be a Lisfranc fracture??

Rball player- Hey thanks. I will be relieved if this is not what I'm dealing with. Sorry to hear about the rball accident.

I Can't wait for Monday and the MRI. Well, can't wait for the report on the MRI. I appreciate your input. Thanks again.

Re: Could it be a Lisfranc fracture??

That it could be a lisfranc fracture is a possibility. There is a article online that gives many of the symptoms called, "Lisfranc Injury of the Foot: A Commonly Missed Diagnosis" I have a frature dislocation from a crush injury. I can not stand on tip toe and was unable to bear weight well . common x-rays did not show this .I had weight bearing x-rays that showed a slight seperation between the tarsametatarsal joints. I had quite a few MRIs as well as a bone scan and it was finnally the third ortho and a ct scan that showed the bone fragments. This was about 2 years after injury. I then had a midfoot fusion that ended up iun a non-union and I am going under the knife again in dec to re-do the fusion.
A foot specialist is the way to go and ask about weight bearing x-rays as well as MRIs and CTs. Don't be shy !!!!!!!!!!!! If this is a lisfranc the sooner it is treated the less evasive the treatment can be and the better your prognosis. If the first ortho doesn't satisfy ...Get A SeECOND OPINION!!! I myself saw three ortho's before it was diagnosed. The first just plain out had horrible bedside manner and was no help other that to refer me to the second the second did all he knew and refered me to the third who was even more specialized and he caught it. Good Luck And God Bless!

Re: Could it be a Lisfranc fracture??

Tazzy-

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your input! I am still very concerned as to what is going on.

I had an MRI Monday and still awaiting those results. I go to a podiatrist (on referral from my GP) tomorrow. Hopefully he will have some insight. If not I will go back to an ortho doc I went to when I first was diagnosed with arthritis in my knee.

Thanks for the tips on the weight bearing xray. I didn't know about those. My original xray was negative so I am hoping that MRI shows something.

I'm sorry to hear about all the procedures you've had to go through. I hope this one in December helps. What day do you undergo the procedure? Also what exactly is a mid-foot fusion. I keep seeing the word fusion and don't exactly understand what that is.

I appreciate all the help.
