Has anyone been in a walking cast?
My plantar fasciotomy, which didn't get rid of my plantar fascitis but left me with nerve damage and a fallen arch on the affected foot, has caused me to seek additional help. On Friday I saw a "miracle worker" foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon to hopefully get some relief. His treatment options: walking cast and NSAIDs for 6 weeks or an MRI and surgery. Unfortunately, the affected foot is my right foot, the driving foot. I'm 20 years old and a junior in college with a full-time schedule, and I have to complete 18 hours of service learning for one of my classes. I drive all over the place, and am constantly active. While my foot has slowed me down, I feel this will really limit me, and I just don't feel like the school year is the best time for this inconvienience.
I'm worried about driving with the left foot; and I'm worried about driving with the casted foot too. I drive way too much to get someone to chauffer me around too. Furthermore, I want to go on a ski trip at Christmas, and even then, a cast wouldn't be a fabulous thing to have in our wet, snowy, Michigan weather.
I don't have all the surgery details, but the doctor told me that if I really couldn't see myself in a cast, I should call him back and we could discuss the surgery.
So, have any of you had a fiberglass walking cast? Especially on your driving foot? I'm wondering how you coped... I'd really appreciate any and all tips! Stories are greatly appreciated. I feel so lost in all of this... at this point, doing nothing until May seems like my best option yet.
Take care,
Karyn
