2nd Double Bunionectomy in 6 years - Screw popping out! - Foot Problems Message Board

I had a double bunionectomy 6 years ago with screws placed in each of my feet. Here I am six years later, age 24 having to go through the complete surgery again! I noticed a bump on my left foot about a year and a half ago (I was pregnant then breast-feeding so I had to put off getting xrays) and I just had xrays to reveal that the screw in my left foot was 3/4 of the way out! It is not painful but you can see it through the skin. The xrays also revealed that both bunions returned! I have to get surgery on 01/16/08 to fix both screws because my dr. feels that they were placed in the wrong location by the dr. who did the surgery originally! Aditionally, I have absolutely NO movement in any of my toes. Can't bend them, can't wiggle, nothing! This is such a hassle because now I have a 1 year old running around and I have to have another double bunionectomy! I don't know what I will do. The first surgery I had, the recovery was so painful. I was off my feet for weeks. I am dreading this. My husband said I should sue the first dr. but it has been 6 years. Do I have a case? I wouldn't even know where to begin. I am more mad than anything. I thought I solved this 6 years ago.

i am so sorry to hear your story. i dont know if you can sue the 1st dr. the screws have to be fixed and it can happen that bunions return. i dont understand which toes do not move, but you have to do something about that. do you feel any pain at all?

Hi there. Thanks for your concern. I'm sure I will be fine but I am just not looking forward to recovery part. It's going to be hard with my year old son to look after. He is very active!
About your question about the movement; I cannot move any of my toes! I can't bend them at all. Both feet are like this. I had a nerve test done (EMG?) which ruled that my nerves are fine, it's something to do with the screw placement or tendion scar tissue. The dr. doing this 2nd surgery said he will look at what is causing the immobility. It is like the screw in the bone is making my toes in a locked position. There is no pain, it's just really weird not being able to bend your toes. I hope I will regain some movement.

i hope so, too. i have never heard of that. that is unbeieveable. cant wait to hear what the 2nd dr has to say. good luck
