Cast Question - Foot Problems Message Board

It has been several years since I have had a cast on my foot. After my second surgery in two months (bunionectomy), I am in a hard cast this time.
Here is my issue:
I am NWB but when I am driving and my foot is resting on the floor board, it feels like I am trying to put on a cowboy boot and my foot hasn't gone all the way in - like the heel is against the very bottom of where the boot starts the straight part. Not sure if that is a good description or not, but the best I could come up with. My ankle also feels like it rubs in a weird way against the cast.
For those of you who are in or have had a cast, is this pretty much normal? It has only been two weeks since the second surgery and I know that I am still very swollen - maybe that is part of the problem??? I don't go back to the doctor until the 20th unless I have a problem. I am starting to wonder if this cast is a problem

Hi Taterbug - I had a hard cast with my bunionectomy 18 months ago, however my cast was only a "half cast" (under my foot and up the back of my leg) held on with ace wraps which I could remove for short periods of time to "rest" my leg and ankle. It sounds like your foot is not where it is supposed to be in the cast. Have you been back at all to the dr since the surgery? This sounds like at least a phone call to the office if not a "visit" to make sure things are okay. You wouldn't want the healing to go wrong. Good luck.

I had the half cast from Monday (the day of surgery) until the following Thursday, when they put the full cast on.
I will end up calling them. I just hate to seem like I am finding something wrong but it won't hurt to call. Thanks.

I was in a cast for a 5th metatarsal fracture. What you describe may be that some of the swelling has started to decrease and thus the cast is a bit too loose. Call the doc and see if you can have it examined.

You will not be complaining or finding something wrong. It's your right as a patient, if you have concerns they should be addressed. Let us know how you make out.
