major frustration with post surgical foot problems - Foot Problems Message Board

I am looking for some info/support with my foot problem. I had gone to an OS a year ago and he diagnosed 3 different issues (I had a hammertoe, Morton's neuroma and another joint issue.) but said to try alternative nonsurgical.. ie changing shoes, orthodics but not injections. He said to come back when and if it got worse. When I did over a year later he said that he felt surgery was the best option with all 3 at that point so I did. I had surgery in November 2007. In retrospect I should have been more proactive in both asking more detailed questions and researching it. I did do some of both, and even asked my GP his take but now am so frustrated with the resulting problems that I feel I should have done more.
I had an uneventful recovery for the first 6 weeks but since have continued to have problems with swelling,inflammation and some pain. Now it has accelerated to a fairly constant burning/tingling sensation from my toes radiating up my leg to my knee. I also get a sharp quick pain intermittently. I have even been woken up at night with this.
I have another appointment with the OS in 2 weeks but know he has no clue what is going on as well. I am thinking I should go elsewhere for another opinion. (I do like the OS and to this point felt fine with him.) Any opinions, suggestions, information???? I would really appreciate any feedback!

how frustrating this is. a cat scan and ultrasound might pinpoint the problem, but i know its not that easy. does your dr only specialize in feet? that may make a difference, also. i am going through so much pain and my dr has not returned my calls.

The pain sounds like nerve pain....I had quite a bit of it and still do at times now. (I am 3 months post op from a bunionectomy.) The burning sensation sounds like what I had in that my tendon was cut between the big toe and the next one to allow for the big toe to go back into the right place. There is another thread on this message board about a specific nerve problem....peroneal nerve?? I think on page 2??...anyway, scroll down til you get to it, then do some research online...maybe this is what is going on with your foot.

I too would be very frustrated and would be seeking some answers! It could very well be that you had an uneventful recovery for 6 weeks because everything was still swollen?? I don't know. Seeking a second opinion might be a good idea. Something someone suggested is to seek out your city's sports ortho? They have more at stake when doing surgeries and so may do a better job.
