Chevron bunionectomy in future

Had first dr. appt today and wow, the dr. was pretty awesome. (My primary said he was the best in town.) Great bedside manner. He told me that I have hypermobile 1st ray which is what has caused my moderate bunions. We googled that in his office so I have some websites to look at. I made a quick list of questions thanks to janewhite1 and her quick response to my earlier post. He answered all of my questions and said that a chevron bunionectomy is the procedure that he would perform. I'd be off of work for about a week. I'm fortunate enough to be in management and have a desk job.

So any thoughts or comments or warnings or suggestions?

Re: Chevron bunionectomy in future

Back to work in a week? I suppose you could do it, but it may not be pleasant. I had a chevron plus a bunionette bunionectomy with pins.
My second week I walked too much and had to go NWB for five days.
You mentioned bunions. Would you have bilateral (both feet) done? That would definitely compound your recovery. I would recommend you continue your research and read threads on this board. I hope I don't sound too negative, but I'm now six weeks post-op and my recovery is very fresh. I'm glad you like your doctor, that is definitely a plus.

Re: Chevron bunionectomy in future

Well, he said that I would be off the rest of the week that the surgery is done then off the entire next week. So I guess that would actually be more than a week. I'll only be having one done at a time. I'll do the one that's causing the most pain first (right) and do the other one probably next year. I pretty much sit all day at work and will be able to put my foot up, so that may help. I'm also salaried and I'm thinking I would work part of the day for the first week or two back.

Re: Chevron bunionectomy in future

I think you should be fine with that time frame. I had a severe bunion so I had a more invasive procedure but I was back to work after a week off. Granted I was on crutches so I wasn't putting any weight on my foot but it was a little difficult getting around. As long as you sit 90% of the time and are able to elevate your foot (I put a stool under my desk), I don't think you have anything to worry about. You should continue to ice your foot at work if possible, if not then ice it when you get home.

Re: Chevron bunionectomy in future

Dancergal, I don't want to take advantage of someone else's thread, but I rarely see you on this board. I am 5 1/2 months postop, with a similar bunionectomy to yours, an austin/akin procedure, with my big toe cut and the bone below it. I have full ROM, but now that I'm walking more, I have alot of pain on the ball of my foot and into my arch. Did you experience this? I've tried to jog a little, but the above pain increases...... I'm not one of those few who was running at 4 months again. As far as working, postop..... I do know I wasn't able to walk hardly at all the first 4-6 weeks, so, if you do go back to work early, I'd plan ahead, so, you hardly have to get up and are able to ice and elevate at your desk.
