PTTD-How Many People have both feet go bad?

I had PTTD 2 1/2 years ago and my other foot is really starting to bother me. Arch is falling and starting to pronate. I wear orthotics to try to "hold it off" as long as I can as my operated foot has had some ongoing joint issues. How many people end up having the second foot done? And is the second surgery easier or worse than the first one?

Re: PTTD-How Many People have both feet go bad?

When I saw the xray of my " new and improved foot" I jokingly said " the other foot is going to get jealous" .The doctor said let's hope it doesn't try to copy it. In all likelyhood, the accessory navicular that I had in the bad foot that rubbed the PTTD for so long, is also in the right foot. All you can do is wear the orthotics and do the exercises etc and hope for the best. He did tell me that I should give up jogging and swim or use the elliptical.
Not really an answer to your question but I am afraid it is a real risk.

Yeah, when I asked my surgeon if there was a high risk of the other foot going bad he just said "yes". but I really didn't get into how often it happens, why, etc. I did not have flat feet as a child. Did you?

Re: PTTD-How Many People have both feet go bad?

I am not sure of how many, but for me, I started with issues on my left foot/ankle/leg. About 4 months after everything started on the left side, the right side started with the exact same symptoms, just a little bit more mild.
I am 6 weeks post op from surgery on the left PTT, and the right one has held up pretty well, with me relying on it, however, its starting to give, so I am a little concerned---BUt we knew this was a possibility from the start---the Ortho said he was hoping that surgery on the left, would maybe "help" the right one from going downhill.
But I will say----my severe pain would hit when i was on my feet for awhile---I am fairly active and always "on the go"---and on the days where I had cleaned house, or been on my feet baking cakes ( a side job/hobby)---I would be in tears, and barely able to function, and would have to sit down for several hours to recover-----I would catch myself "rolling" my ankles on each foot to walk.
So I guess my point, is that, my right is probably not in the best of shape---BUT I don't think its nearly ready for surgery. At least I HOPE not----I have been bored out of my mind these last few weeks---and I still have 3 weeks to go, before I go back to work!!

Best wishes to you---I really hope your situation improves

Re: PTTD-How Many People have both feet go bad?

Hi Tracie, sorry to hear good foot bothering you. I had pttd surgery on left foot Sept. 04 and sorry to say but just had right foot done May 08 and in my 4th week recovering and yes and no! (on is it worse), some ways you know what to expect and others ways you get angry you are in the same place again. I try to tell myself this too will pass. I will add I am a Flight Attendant and probally hard on my feet so take that into consideration.

Carol
