Heels ever again? - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi all! - new to the forums!
I've suffered from what I believe is hallux rigidus in my right big toe for about 4 years now and lately since I've been forced to wear dressier shoes for work it's become a painful issue. I can only wear certain sorts of shoes in an under 3" heel and even then it gets annoying after 8 hours. Even flats sometimes cause pain. I was never a high heel wearer until recently so I'm not sure where this big toe problem came from as I've never "abused" my feet by constantly wearing them. I'm thinking of getting an opinion about my wonky toe and I've done some research about the surgery for such. I guess just getting down to the nitty gritty questions - has anyone had such a thing fixed and can you ever, ever wear high heels again? I know I should just worry about being able to walk correctly but I get really jealous of those ladies wearing super cute high heels in so many styles at work while I have to limp around in my plain janes.

Well, I've had surgery for mine and I can wear 2" heels now. The 3" ones are out but there are plenty of good looking mid height heels out there - just got a pair of red patent sling backs this summer. Very cute shoes! Just had to have some after I heard Kelli Pickler's song "In My Red High Heels." Do you jog, dance, do aerobics, etc? HL is also commonly called turf toe, runner's toe, tennis toe, etc.

yes you can wear heels again. but, dont wear 3 in. stick with 2+in heels. the problem will be that you should stay away from the very narrow toe shoes and heels. that can cause the problem again.

Those red patent slingback sound sooo CUTE! I guess I just have to do some scouting around to find the right kinds in real shoe stores. I find the best deals online but I just never know how they're going to work out with this toe of mine. It's so frustrating when the toe won't even bend enough to put the shoe on

How long was your recovery for surgery? I'm wondering if I'll have to take any time off of work. Also did your doctor say you'll have to wear lower heels forever or could you gradually work your way up - or would that damage anything?
The funny thing is, I've never really done any of the turf toe activities much, like tennis or running. I was always stubbing my toes on stuff when I was younger (oh those metal bed legs!) but I don't know if that would have any bearing on it...

I guess 2" will have to do then. You're right, I do find extreme discomfort from the shoes that force the toes into a narrow point - almost all of the nice dress shoes tend to cram all the toes together - especially the big toe at an angle. Round toes and square toes will be in my search...
