Bunion just developed this year, need advice - Foot Problems Message Board

Hello,

I am new to this board and have read some, I am 44 yr old female. Early this summer is when i first noticed the bunion on my right foot. It was not there last year, I wear flip flops as long as i can every year and would have noticed. When i first noticed it i had a pair of other kind of sandals on that just caused so much pain and i really looked and felt it and realized what it is. I am wondering how fast these things grow or appear. Well since then the big toe above the bunion is having numbness and there are times when it feels like some minor pains shooting through foot and up back of leg, maybe not so much pain as weakness, its hard to describe. I didnt think the bunion and numbness in big toe were related but i am starting to wonder. if i touch the area where there is numbness it does cause pain. Any one out there who can give me information on bunions ? my aunt and mother have had them for years , I remember them always complaining about them. Is this going to get worse and is the numbness in big toe related? Im really hoping dont need surgery.

I would check to see if you have a morton's neuroma and, if you have to have bunion surgery, I suggest that you have it done by an ortho man. I had both my feet done at once and it was painless surgery FOR ME.

I have had two severe bunions which formed in my teen years.
They were repaired in my fifties.
I think that I went through all sorts of pain and joint issues.
However, numbness was never one of them.
Maybe it is time to have someone check it.
Numbness means a nerve is being pressured and that is something that should be looked into................

i think you have to see a dr for a proper diagnosis. i also agree with seeing an ortho foot and ankle specialist.

I am going to call my dr tomorrow to schedule appt for him to look at bunion. My daughter in law said that the numbness is probably from the bunion growing on nerve. I thought they grew outwards but dont know a whole lot about them. Her sister had 2removed last year from each foot and did very well. she is a hair stylist and is on her feet constantly. I really dont have time to be down after a surgery because i care for mother with alzheimers.im hoping its not growin on a nerve.
