double bunion surgery - Foot Problems Message Board

my doctor has suggested double bunion surgery. What should I do ? This is my second opion. The first doctor suggested one foot at a time.

If you have the time to wait, I would say one foot at a time. If you have a lot of support at home, as well as a plan to make your home handicapped friendly, both at the same time may work for you. I had double bunion surgery on the right foot (first and fifth metatarsal). I was able to get around with a walker, but did need to spend time completely NWB due to a one week setback. It was terribly difficult to get around, and I was grateful it was only of short duration. There are people who have written on this board who had double bunion surgery and were happy they did. Look in the archieves if you don't get responses to this post. My surgery was five months ago, and I'm doing well. I will need the same surgery on the other foot eventually, but for now I'm enjoying my improved mobility.

Hi Murder 55 - I assume you mean both feet at once. It depends on the type surgery you are having done (extent of surgery) and as to how long you have to be NWB if at all and the opinion of your surgeon. I just had my second bunionectomy Oct 8th. The first was done 2 years ago. I asked my surgeon about doing both at once and because of the type I had to have done he said no because I had to be NWB for 8 weeks each time and that would have meant total wheelchair and bed. I couldn't do that so it was one at a time. Some bunion surgeries allow partial weight bearing right away so then I think it is doable.

Sorry. I did understand that you meant surgery on both feet. What I was trying to say was that one at a time was manageable, two would be complicated but possible. I wanted to have both of mine done at the same time, but like RightfootMary, my doctor discouraged me from it. He said that I "Would not be a happy camper". But also like Mary, my surgeries were complicated, mine because it would be both sides of the foot, then x's two.

it really depends on your lifestyle. if you have the time and someone to help you full time, then i say do both. if you dont, do 1 foot at a time.
