Bone cement instead of autograft? - Foot Problems Message Board

Hi guys

I read in some news the other day that a woman her some sort of cement (calcium phosphate based) injected in one of her spine vertebraes to strengten it...
I'm wondering if is possible to be done in the Talar bone too...
If my drilling didn't work (which I'll know in a few months), then I will have to go for OATS... The surgeon said something about collecting bone from the knee.
I really don't like the idea of having my knees fiddles with, my knees are bad as they are, don't need any help to mess it up more.

Any ideas?

Hey,
I don't know about the specific bone your talking about but I know someone brought up cement to my doctor instead of a graft and he said he didn't want to do that because it couldn't really be a permanent fix and that people have had a lot of problems with the cement in the past. But who knows everyone is different, there is no harm in asking your doctor about it; for now though you should try and think positive and believe that the drilling worked!!!

I have never heard about the cement but for oats you don't allways take from the knee. You can get an allograft from a cadavar, there are several different brands of synthetic plugs they can use or they also can use the tibia if it is not too big of a lesion.
However Don't get all hung up on that, Take care of yourself listen to the doc. Don't rush and at the same time don't be lazy about the exercises they want you to do.
How big were the lesions? How long did you have them? How old are you? Not to be nosy just there are alot of healing factors. best wishes

Hi guys.

Is the Talus, the broken piece was about the size of a £1 coin (20-21mm), struggled to walk for about a year till I finally had the surgery which was on 13th of Feb... and I'm 32 (yeah, it's the real age lol)

Why I'm askin about it is because the OS's team messed me about enough, and if the drilling is not gonna work, I wanna be prepared and "documented" about the options I have so they don't get the chance to mess me about again. Except the surgeon, I trust no one in he's team.

I do my exercises and started to use the leg as balance support, no weight on it yet tho.
