Hi. I am hopeful some people can send us in the right direction. My 22 year old daughter has bunions on both feet which are becoming painful. She just graduated from college and feels this is probably a great time to get them fixed. Should we see an OS or a podiatrist? We are in NH and want to go to the best doctor, but we don't know of anyone who has had foot surgery for recommendations. She has begun to complain of pain daily after being on her feet. She always wears sneakers with wide toe boxes (only thing that is comfortable for her) and has orthodics, so I believe surgery is probably the only step for her. Does anyone have any advice? Do bunions tend to get worse if nothing is done to correct them? I have read some terrible stories online about people's feet becoming worse after surgery, so I want to make sure we do the right thing and go to the right doctor. Thanks for any advice!
They will get worse as time goes one. I would find a good foot and ankle ortho. Ask your family doc, gyno, dentist, whomever for the name of a good one. Stay away from podiatrists.
I had a good outcome with a podiatrist for bunion surgery. I think the important thing is to find a good doctor, period. Since the situation isn't an emergency, get referrals for a few podiatrists and OS, and decide which one will meet your daughter's needs.
