I had hammer toe surgery on my right foot 06/23/2009. I had 3 toes
done with pins in until july 24. I opted to have it done because i was getting corns on my little toe ..

I am wondering if it is normal for the foot and toes to be swelled up . Any info on what i can do / besides ice/ to get the swelling down . My toes feel so bad.

I also have pain in the foot....

I am getting down because I thought I could wear all the pair of shoes that i couldn't wear before this surgery...

Pattie, from what I've learned your feet can stay swollen for up to 3 months.

Oh no . I have 30 pairs of summer shoes that i wanted to wear this year..

Residual swelling can last for a long time. It's hard to give you a time frame because everyone's body reacts differently to surgery but I had a bunionectomy and hammertoe correction and had minimal residual swelling up to a year after my surgery. I doubt yours will last that long if you only had the hammertoe correction. For now, I would elevate and ice as much as possible to help minimize the swelling. You should also be massaging your toes to get rid of scar tissue, that can help get your toes back to normal size. It's best to do this after a shower or bath when the tissue is warmed up and more pliable.

Wear the sandals anyway. No one is going to notice a swollen toe and it's no fun to wear closed toe shoes in the summer!

Thanks for the advice. I brought shoes over the years and my corn on my little toe-due to hammer toe- made them uncomfortable to wear- that is how I ended up with 30 pairs and the reason I finally got up the nerve to have the surgery.

Because of the swellin in toes/foot I can only wear old shoes/sandels.. maybe next summer for the other 28..

My Dr never told me about massaging them for the scar tissue. Thanks for that info...
