I sprained my ankle a month ago and never went to get it treated. Swelled pretty good for a few days, but I was still walking/limping on it. It got better to a point, but its still consistantly painful after standing or walking on it for a bit, also I get a bit of a pain inferior to my lateral malleolul when I rest my foot in different positions(like on its side)..
Is it worth going to get it checked out, or are they most likely just going to tell me to take it easy?
Definitely have an x-ray done. There's a chance you could have a chipped bit of bone in your joint and if left untreated, a few years down the road you could be in a world of arthritic pain. I speak from experience and am now currently awaiting major ankle surgery that may or may not work. If it doesn't, my ankle will probably be fused. I'm only 33.
Aw, that's not cool. Each time my family has gone to the doctor for a sprain, they have x-rayed. I feel that not only should you just get an x-ray of every sprain but extra doubly more so if it's taking this long to feel better. I hope you can figure your way into an x-ray room.
My ankle sprain was blown off by 2 doctors until I went and saw an ankle specialist. The average physician or general ortho Dr. is not going to think outside the box. An xray may not show some problems but be proactive about getting treatment if it doesn't improve. When I finally went to an ankle specialist she diagnosed me in 30 seconds. Ankle sprains should improve within a few weeks - if they don't there could be other serious problems.
Defintly keep trying different docs. I went 3 months with badly torn ligaments before a doc would listen to me. 6 yrs later I ended up needing surgery to repair the ligaments bc they had not healed properly. there is a very good chance you may have injured the ligaments or tendons in your ankle. go to emerg and tell the doc exactly what happened and how long it has been. if you are limping too much it can cause further problems with your back and hips so be sure to walk when only necessary if the doc refuses to give you crutches. also you could go to a physiotherapist and have him/her take a look. he/she can give you some exercises/stretches and can treat your sprain better than a doc.
