| Panicking--Could I have re-fractured my heels?
Several months ago (March), I stress fractured both of my heel bones in multiple places (the doc said they were pretty bad for stress fractures). I recently had MRIs which showed that my right heel bone is 99% healed and my left 90% healed (but I had the left done a few weeks earlier, so basically they're even). With the encouragement of my doc and some of you on this board, I began walking again last week and found it to be painful but less so each day. I felt really excited and hopeful for the first time in months. But at PT this past Wednesday, my therapist had me do a balancing exercise in which I balanced on each foot for about three minutes, touching my foot down and back up every thirty seconds. It hurt, but he told me to do it anyway. Afterwards he had me walk on the treadmill for five minutes. Since then the pain in my feet has been awful. It's surrounding my heels and radiating upwards and feels worse than the original pain in March.
I'm freaking out. I should have insisted on stopping the exercise but wanted to be "impressive," which was dumb. I now realize that putting all my body weight on one foot in addition to forcing the muscles and tendons to work like crazy to enable me to balance was NOT a good idea. Could I have actually re-injured the bones? Because that's exactly what it feels like and I am so scared.
