Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Okay, I'm getting nervous about surgery now. I still do not feel well, but I think my lungs are still clear. I have pre op tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping they will not postpone the surgery as I really just want to get this done and over with. They are doing arthroscopic surgery as well as the brostrom procedure. How bad is the pain after the surgery - really....

I'm staying with a friend for at least the first two weeks and then will be home alone after that. My friend wants me to stay longer, so I'm thinking about staying at her house longer.

Hi Joyful,

I had a Brostrom as part of a larger overall surgery (calcaneal osteotomy & gastroc recession). Honestly, I didn't have any pain in the area from the Brostrom but it may have been masked by the other pain. I will say that it was the third time I've had surgery on my ankle ligaments and the first two were not significantly painful. My only advice is to stay ahead of the pain by taking all of the recommended meds for the first two days. It's not going to hurt you and will get you through any pain that may be there. Playing catch-up if the pain gets ahead of you is almost impossible.

Good luck!

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

I had arthroscopic drilling. I posted to you on Hooywoods thread. As PP mentioned take your pain Meds as prescribed and don't skp any doses and you should be able to stay ahead of the pain. Are you going to have a local? I felt great the day of surgery but skipped a middle of the night dose that evening. Huge mistake, took me several hours to get back ahead of the pain. Made sure no to skip a dose again. I was ble to start stretching the doses out day 3or4.

Mrs Heidi

They are using general anethesia for me. I"m still sick, coughing and stuff, but they said as long as I wasn't coughing up stuff by Wednesday they would do the surgery.

They did say it was most likely there was more damage then just the Brostom repair. I am staying with a friend the first two weeks, she already said she's getting up every four hours to keep me ahead of the pain

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

That is good news Joyful that they will go ahead with the surgery as long as you your not any worse then you are today. I had general anesthesia also. They gave me a shot of pain medication that last over 12 hours. I had no idea they were going to do it but I certainly benefitted from it. That is great tht you've got such great friends to open up there home to you and help you get adjusted for the first few weeks.

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Yes it has taken a huge weight off of me, to have them open their home to me. I am relieved. They did say today that I would be NWB for 48 hours and then as tolerated after that - go figure? Strange.

JOYFUL--Oh that's great news that they will still do the surgery! Whew! What a relief huh? Also, very impressed with your friend who is opening up her home to you for 3 weeks and will get up every 4 hours to keep you ahead of the pain! That is a FANTASTIC friend! So glad you have her! I'm still so surprised about the NWB for only 48 hours and then as tolerated! I'm betting you aren't going to be able to tolerate it for a lot longer than that, but I hope I'm wrong! I have to say I'm jealous! The biggest reason I didn't want to do this surgery is the loss of independence b/c of NWB for 6 wks! But we're all here to keep each other company right?

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Hollywood - Yeah I have no doubt that I won't be bearing weight that soon - probably isn't going to happen. Was told I had to wear the boot for 12 days - do not take it off for any reason, and then for another 2-3 months after that, only taking it off for showers.

Of course, since this is workers comp, the pain meds have to be pre-approved and the pharmacy isn't guaranteeing that I will even have them by the time I have surgery on Wed. GRRR. Calling workers comp tomorrow

Has been hard to get ready cause I've felt so miserable physically. Have to work all day tomorrow, won't get home til around 9pm tomorrow night. Sigh, it will all get done, I know it will. Good luck on Wed.

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

WHAT???? They don't know if your pain meds will be ready for you when you need them? OMG! Will you know this before you go under anesthesia on Wed? You don't need to have surgery if you don't know if you will have pain control! Girl, I'm so sorry! They are making this so miserable for you! *hugs* It's making me mad for you! I had a worker's comp for one of my ankle injuries too and they went as far as an MRI to diagnose and a few therapy sessions which was fine. I was on a travel assignment and didn't want to go any further, but they treated me like I was scum just to get that far! I understand they get some abuse, but seriously, they should be able to figure out the difference in the people who are legit and the ones who aren't! Geez! I'm so sorry!

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Yeah it's pretty crazy. The claims adjuster has been pretty good compared to some companies, so I'm hoping I can get ahold of him tomorrow and get them approved. I don't know if I will have it by surgery. I'm hoping to have it tomorrow afternoon. If not I will call the doctor's office and see if they can give me something else. It is insane, that's for sure.

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Hey Joyful,

Just wanted to say hi and wish you all the very best with the surgery. My surgery is on 27th so we will be recovering at the same time. I'm really pleased I've found some people here who are having surgery around the same time as me!

Sorry you're still not feeling well. Hopefully the enforced rest after surgery will help see off that cold/flu! I can't believe what they said about the meds! I really hope you get that sorted. I am being treated in Switzerland and luckily they are more relaxed about meds over here. Although when I had drilling for OCD 6 years ago, my surgeon advised me not to take anything at all as apparently the procedure had a higher success rate with no meds!!

I am interested about the WB issue... I am having a calcaneal osteotomy and my surgeon has said that I can be weight bearing as tolerated straight away. This seems really weird as everything I've read suggests I should be NWB. I guess some doctors just do things a bit differently. In any case I imagine the 'as tolerated' part will keep us both off the surgical foot for a while.

Anyway, I hope everything goes really well tomorrow. Look forward to hearing from you on the other side!

A

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

I find it very strange and concerning that some docs are okay with weight bearing right away and others are not. I was no wb for 8 weeks and even then, it was miserable.

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

So glad you got the Meds approved and picked up. I am sure that was a huge stress off your back. What kind of boot? 12 days seems long for wearing it 24/7 then another 2-3 months. At least it isn't a cast. Just popped on to wish you the best of luck tomorrow. I will be waiting for an update once your up to it.

Thank you so much. It is a boot that goes almost up to my knee, a walking boot I think it's called.

Re: Brostrom Procedure on 2/22/12

Hi A

I'm in a lot of pain. Taking two prescription meds along with 600 mg of ibuprofen. It's not as bad as yesterday. It was excruciating yesterday. Surgery itself went well, he had to fix two other tendons, which I wasn't surprised about. Just taking it easy now.
