Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
I love that you get to do all of these wonderful things for PT... I know it hurts but it's going to help! . I'm elevating right now. It's 8AM and I haven't had Percocet since 7PM last night. I'm hurting but took ibuprofen and am hoping that helps. I really want off of the Percocet. But I do have another script I'm going to fill for pt time.

Hey Hollywood! Glad to hear you are making such good progress. I have started PT too and I agree - it hurts! Am doing similar things to you but no bike yet, no massage either and no magic boot! That sounds fab - wish I could have a go with one of those. I have a great PT too - I have been through a few in the past and it makes such a difference to have someone you really get along with, and who understands your issues. Sorry you have become a little accident prone! I guess it happens as we start to move around more. Please take care and I hope you feel better soon - and that you made it to the gymnastics event. I am really impressed by how much you are getting out! Happy Easter!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Thanks everyone! Gonna make this short and will write more tomorrow. I'm,exhausted! Thoroughly! I did go to the gymnastics regionals. Besides that and PT yesterday and my incident today, I am sore and tired. My Percocet has kicked in I'm so tired it's taking me forever to type this. Keeping to,back up and retype!!
PZNATTI-I'm doing 2x/wk right now, hope he moves me up to 3x/wk once I'm walking and have no restrictionsm(inversion/eversion).
AMETHY5T--Yeah I'm not sure what's up with my accident prone falling. I'm never like this! Frustrating! But SOOO glad you have a great PT too and are having a good experience! Makes a huge difference! The boot ROCKS!! I'm looking into seeing if insurance will cover all or part to buy one I love it so much! Have to have an Rx for it so will have to talk to dr, but I would ice so much more with this and I will have to ice my ankle the rest of my life after 2 ankle reconstructions if I want to remain active (and I do.)!!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Sorry guys, didn't mean to leave you hanging! It's like everything caught up with me last night and today! I've been EXHAUSTED and hurting! I will start with Friday. I went to Good Friday services with my husband. After that, I had PT and they took it a little easy on me since I was so sore from the first time. I rode the stationary bike for 10 min, did towel scrunching with my toes, ankle pumps, quad lifts and quad presses. Then they did my retrograde massage (where they start with my toes and massage up towards my knee to get the swelling out. Feels good and works well), and then the game ready ice water, compression boot with e-stim. LOVE this! Gotta get my doc to write me an Rx for one of those! I was so sore and the PT said that it's going to be a while before the swelling is gone enough that I don't have pain in it and basically I will need to be out of the boot before it's really gone. I think I have 6 weeks in the boot. So Friday night, I went to see a movie with my husband. Then Saturday....I was getting out of the shower and I had my knee on my stool I usually sit on to get ready. I turned to lean and get something and I guess I wasn't in the center of the stool like I thought I was and the stool tipped over towards my left (injured side) and there was NOTHING I can do. I came down right on my foot. Thankfully, the whole foot, heel, pad and toes. It didn't twist thankfully! I had nothing on it. No boot, no brace, wrap, sock, nothing! I screamed because I was scared, not because it hurt (right then anyway). I sat down and examined it and nothing. No searing pain. I finished getting ready and went with my sister down to where we went to college (4 hour round trip) to watch the NCAA gymnastics regionals. It got really sore!!!! Took percocet when I got home. Sunday, I went to church for the first time (on a buys Sunday morning) since surgery. After that I went to my parents house and had lunch and then by that afternoon, I was exhausted! It's like the whole 6 wks caught up with me! This morning, (Monday) I woke up with a splitting headache, my neck/shoulders/back were knotted and hurting and my ankle/foot/toes were sore and swollen and my toes HURT! I was supposed to drop off my resume and headshot at an open casting call for a feature film they are about to film in my city starring a major film actor and I canceled that b/c I was feeling so bad and hurting (I can email my pics thankfully). I took a nap and then went and got a massage. I knew I needed one, but didn't realize how BAD I needed one! As far as my foot now, some of the swelling is down. I'm icing and elevating. I have PT again tomorrow so should be interesting. Is anyone else who is beginning weight bearing having issues with their toes really hurting from stiffness and swelling? I knew I would be taking more pain medication once PT started, but I didn't think it was going to be 2-3 times a day!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Thanks! I'm okay. I guess the good part about it is that it forced me to slow down. I pretty much kept it up all day yesterday (minus going for the massage) with ice. Result is swelling is better today and pain is down, not gone, but down. I had PT today and it went well. Did my exercises, told my PT about the fall. Heel lifts (sitting down of course) and they were killing my ankle so we stopped. Then at the end, he did massage again starting at the toes and rubbing up the foot and leg. He also stretched my toes both ways and stretched my ankle in dorsiflexion (pulling back) and slight plantar flexion. Then since I had said my peroneal muscles were knotted and hurt, he had me turn over on my stomach and he massaged my calf and peroneals and he kept saying "no wonder you're hurting, SO tight! It's like marbles were placed in there". I almost went to sleep! Then it was e-stim and ice water/compression boot time with elevation. I was definitely sore, but left with the pain gone for the time b/c of the ice water boot. However, wearing off now and it's sore again. Just the way it's going to be and I haven't even been cleared for inversion/eversion yet!

I hope you are feeling better Hollywood - would've scared me to death as well. Sigh, why is it when you are injured - that's the foot/leg/arm, etc that you land on when you fall - never fails.
I must admit I am so scared about rehab......and don't even start for another month. Supposed to go back to Dominos sometimes in June - not sure what I'm gonna do about that - sigh.
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Thanks everyone! I really am ok. I'm just going through the same amount of pain we all do off and on duringmrecovery. The good news is since it didn't twist, then the repair is good and I didn't damage anything. Just caused myself more pain. My PT did say that he hopes my doctor will allow me 8 wks of PT b/c he says I'm an "at risk" patient since this is my 2nd and the first one failed and because I'm very active. He said I've already gotten back 15 degrees of dorsiflexion so I'm almost to neutral which is great from, where I started! Gonna get interesting when my doc finally allows me to do inversion/eversion. That's the real pain I'm scared of!
JOYFUL--I totally get you're nervous about especially since you start so late. I was right there with you and still nervous about what is to come! But it is so beneficial and even though painful, they're so good about using modalities to control the pain!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
You all have given me great information and I am thankful for that for sure! I am now about 4 weeks post op, cast on, walking boot is next (April 18th). From what I am reading, It looks like some pain will return once I get to the walking boot,
Do you think I should ask my Dr for pain meds when I go to that appointment in preparation for PT and the walking boot?
I didn't think I would need them but I believe I am fooled by the cast and not doing anything with that ankle. I am virtually pain free at the moment and am a bit nervous now after reading up!
Thanks again for the information.

You should ask your doc as it's good to have them on hand, just in case. I was back on meds for the first two weeks of PT and tapered from there.

That is great that you are basically pain free right now! I haven't started rehab yet and today it's been 7 weeks since surgery....but I would recommend getting meds for rehab - I'm planning on asking my doctor for some more meds when I see him on 5/8/12.....

Hi Hollywood - yeah I don't understand why he is waiting so long, but oh well. I love my PT - she has worked on me for three other surgeries - so I do trust her in that dept. It feels very strange to be off the crutches - I cannot believe it's been 7 weeks today since we both had surgery. I am "overdoing" it without the crutches, so ankle is pretty sore by the evening - taking Tramadol/Motrin again, but other than that it feels good. Still have very limited range of motion....
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
WeensGT--Hi! Welcome to the boards! What's your story? Glad you are virtually pain free. I had gotten to that point too in my cast and yes, you don't think you need them now, but you are in the cast not weight bearing. I know plenty of times people asked me, "Does it hurt bad?" And I was like "not right now while in a cast with no weight on it. Check back with me when I start walking and start PT!" And I was right as others on here had told me that's how it would be. I remember from trying to walk again after my first surgery (didn't have PT with that one) and it hurt so I knew with the amount of work I had this time (more than the first), it would hurt to walk and do PT and it has. Like LURCHY, I have had to go back on pain medication, not much. 1-2 a day, but I usually take one at night anyway because it's really sore by the end of the day. I'm WBAT and currently PWB working to full. Definitely ask your doctor for pain meds to have when you start PT! You'll be glad you have them!
JOYFUL--Yes, it is late, but oh well! At least they are sending you! I never got PT after my first surgery and I think that helped set up my problems that led to this surgery! Glad you love your PT and trust her! Makes a huge difference! Love mine too! I can't believe it's been 7 weeks either! Wow! Time really did go fast. A lot faster than I thought it would, but I had great pain control and help. I'm getting closer to getting off crutches! I'm walking around the house with one crutch and sometimes none if it isn't far, but when I leave the house I take both with me. It gets sore after not too long and I also have a fear of it giving out or something b/c my calf is half the size and the whole leg is weak. They are working on that in PT. Strengthening my quads and rubbing the knots out of my calf and rubbing my scar and the bottom of my foot to get it used to being touched again. My heel is SENSITIVE! Was yours? I'm still only allowed to move the ankle up and down, no side to side. I accidentally moved it to the side today without realizing it and OMG! that hurt! So I'm scared that my most painful part of PT isn't even here yet! My PT said it would get worse pain wise before it got better and I think he may be right! Yikes!!! Sorry you are back on Tramadol/Motrin. I understand. I'm taking more pain meds than I was too. Not much, just 1-2 a day.
