Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Thanks for the warm welcomes and great information ya'll. My Story, well, have sprained my right ankle multiple times throughout life and most recently it started to hurt me a year ago. I have been very active and the activity had to slow because my ankle was aching every day. I finally went to see the docs and after a year of appointments, physical therapy and the like, I finally got the go ahead to have the instability surgery on the right ankle. I had the surgery on March 8th. I had the soft cast/splint for two weeks, then went in and got my hard cast. On the 18th I get my walking boot and will start physical therapy. I think overall, pain was minimal. The first week or two I definitely took my meds, but that's what they were for and I felt OK.
Now, I seem to be better prepared for the next step. I guess it was Naive of me to think I would go in next week, get my walking boot and just jog on out of there like it was nothing huh? hahaha
I will definitely ask for some more pain meds when I go in an know I must take it slow. As you all know, you just get so sick of using crutches and not being able to just get up and walk, so anxiously waiting!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
WEENS--Nope! Not gonna just walk out of there the day you get your cast off! It will take a little bit! Just take it easy on it and use the meds, ice, and elevation if hurts!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Thanks so much for sharing your story! I have 2 weeks before I get my cast off and I am already getting anxious about PT, etc... I was really dreading the surgery and being stuck in the cast for so long, but now I don't want to give it up. Lol My little sister and her 4 small children are staying with me for a while, and I am so glad to have a cast to protect my poor foot. At the same time I am so ready to get my life back and be able to walk normal again.
It is good to hear what to expect in PT. I figured it will be painfull as we aggravate everything and get the foot moving again. I will definitely take all your advice and ask for a script when I get the cast off. I'm on generic Vicodin now which I'm only taking at bed time. I think my body is building up a tolerance to it as it isn't as effective. I wonder if I should ask for something different for PT pain management. I'm not big on pain meds, but I know they are a necessary evil for surgical pain.

PT and recovery for your osteotomy is a long slow process. Your doc will remove your cast and may or may not x-ray your foot to make sure it is fully healed. He will ask you to stand on it in order to check the alignment. The most scary part is putting the weight on your heel. I don't recall it being too painful except that your heel will be extremely sensitive. I felt like there was a ball or something in the middle of my heel that hurt to step on. Def take your pain meds......
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hey Hollywood - just catching up again! So sorry you fell, tho I know that is old news now! Glad you are ok. I have to admit that I am STILL too scared to take a shower unless my husband is there. We have a wet room, which is great for space but not so easy to get from the wet bit to the dry bit on crutches! Hope the PT is still going well. I am like you, no side to side movement yet. It hurts if I even move it a little bit that way!
Planemark - I had a calcaneal osteotomy too, but no tendon work so I am pwb. My doc is always encouraging me to put more weight on the heel but I agree, it is pretty scary. Also my heel is still partly numb, so it feels weird too!
WeensGT - welcome from me too . Yes, I'm afraid recovery from foot surgery is a long and often boring road. Even tho this is my second I still have to keep reminding myself that I'll have a long way to go even when I can walk without crutches!
Hi Joyful - so glad you are off the crutches. That's amazing! Enjoy your freedom!
Pznatti - I know it was a while ago you asked about the PT frequency, but anyway... I'm only going once a week at the mo, due to complicated insurance reasons, but I might try twice when I am working on my foot a bit more. I think in the early stages sometimes it is just about learning to walk again, and they'll be able to give you exercises to do at home. Check your PT's opening hours - could you go before or after school, or is that a problem cos of your littlies?

Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hi AMETHY5T!! How are you doing? What is a wet room? Whatever it is, it sounds cool, but I can see how you are scared to get out of it without your husband there! We want to build a house and include a room that sounds like that so we can bathe our dogs easily and a place they can stay while we are gone!
How is everyone else doing? I'm better. REALLY sore after yesterday's PT, running errands and then going to my friend's house to run errands for a shower and make some stuff and then out to eat. Took it easy today, but about to go eat and see a movie with my husband. I could easily be down to one crutch right now and I am around the house. Actually around the house I can do no crutches for a short period of time. But my husband is still freaking out and doesn't want me to go without them yet. Of course, I would take them with me and leave them in the car just in case I get tired or it gets sore, but he wants them "on" me. Argh! Appreciate he cares, but I need my life back! I go to the doctor on Tues and I am NOT going on both crutches!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hey Hollywood! So... a wet room can be many things! Ours is a long shower room with the shower at one end, sink in the middle and WC at the other end. There's no door or screen to the shower area, just a shallow step up. The whole room is tiled. We have two shower heads, one fixed overhead and one at the side that can be hand held. We chose it all ourselves so got exactly what we wanted! It's so easy for me to take a shower, which is fantastic. After my last surgery we only had over-bath showers and getting a shower was tricky! Anyway, it sounds exactly the sort of thing you need for washing your dogs... as well as yourselves! How exciting that you plan to build your own house. Do you plan to do it soon or is it a dream?
Sounds like you are doing really well - except for overdoing it. It is hard to take that leap and go out without crutches! But I'm sure you will get there very soon. My goal is to be wearing shoes when I see my doc on 24 April!
I am struggling with pain at the moment. Seem to be getting worse rather than better. I have some swelling but not much. But my heel is agony when I step on it and when I step off (I can't push off properly, but it hurts anyway when I release the weight). Aargh! I don't know what to do. I'm really fed up about it. Should I have my foot up more do you think? When I am sitting on the sofa I have my foot out in front of me and I ice it. Do I need to elevate higher?
Totally off topic, my cat had kittens today! She had four and they are so cute and tiny! I thought she would want to be left alone but she cried when I left her so I stayed and saw the whole thing. Amazing! Not sure how the kittens and crutches thing will work out but hopefully they'll stay in the box for a while!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
AMETHY5T--Your wet room sounds fantastic! Well, us building our house is somewhere between realistic and a dream right now. We would totally do it tomorrow if we thought we could sell our house, but the housing market stinks right now for sellers and we would lose money. We've been in our house 5 years this July so we are hoping it will come up soon and we can build. So yes, it's a dream, but only b/c we can't sell our current house right now. We haven't tried either. My husband used to design and build houses on the side while working through college and he's really good with designing and building. He wouldn't build it, but we know what we want and he can design it for us and we'll get a builder to build it. I'm so sorry you are struggling with pain! Maybe try elevating it higher to see if that makes a difference? Definitely ice it! Are you having to take anything? I don't blame you for wanting to be in regular shoes when you see your doctor! By the way, you are seeing your doctor on my anniversary! April 24th we will have been married 8 years! How super sweet of your mommy cat to want you there! Awww! Made me smile! What color are the kittens? Will you keep them?
So for me....had a baby shower to go to tonight. Got over there and did a little to help out. I had done more the previous day. I was standing in the kitchen talking to people with everyone else and then someone helped me get my plate and i sat at the table and ate. Then the activity at the shower is we all painted onesies and each onesie had a # on it from 1-12 for the baby's first year so mom can take a pic of the baby at month 1, month 2, and so on. If the month fell on a holiday we did iron on appliqués or painted it in those colors (July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc). So I sat at the table and painted 2 different onesies (Christmas and V-Day). That was another 2 hours and then I sat and recorded her gifts and she opened them. So basically from 5:30-10:15, I sat with my leg down in the boot. Now granted, I did have some salty foods last night and for lunch, but good grief. When I got home, my ankle/foot/toes were BLOWN up! The most swollen since the cast came off! Even my right foot was swollen on top. I had worn some Mary Jane type shoes and in between the part that covers my toes and the strap that goes across the top of my foot was swollen b/c that's where it had to go! I knew my foot was hurting more and more as the night went on and that that wasn't normal, but I had no idea. When I got home and took the boot off and saw how swollen it was, then it all made sense. Of course, thats when my husband tells me that this is why I need to stay on crutches for 2 more weeks! Um, excuse me? No! I had both with me since I wasn't in the house, but I was loosely using them. I see my doctor this Tues and I'm only going on one crutch even though I will have the other in the car just in case! So ice and meds for me! It hurts! I hope it calms down by Monday when my next PT appt is b/c I wanted it to be a good appt with good measurements taken so the report he is going to send to my doctor will look good! But this morning, I was so sore when I woke up b/c my foot was in plantar flexion for a long time (I'm a tummy sleeper) so when I tried to pull my toes back towards my shin, it hurt SO bad and I had been doing this on PT (just 2 days prior on Thurs) without much of a problem! So frustrating! It's almost like 2 steps forward and 1 step back. JUST when you are thinking you are over a challenge or through a stage, you come crashing back to reality! Ugh!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hollywood, I'm so amazed at how much you have been able to do now that your cast is off. Sounds like you are starting to get your life back, and that's a good thing. :-) I know you are a few weeks ahead of me in the recovery process, and that gives me some hope The nurse at my OS office told me that recovery after this surgery is a roller coaster ride. Truer words have never been said.
I'm sorry to hear how much pain and swelling you are having this evening. Hopefully you will have a chance to rest your foot up and feel better. Sounds like my experience on Easter last week. I was bad and didn't prop my leg up, and I ate allot of salty food. My foot did the same thing in my cast. It was so swollen and painfull by the time I got home. I think that salt is not our friend right now. Hang in there!
It sounds like everyone else is doing good too! I hope you all continue to heal and progress!
Amethy5t, that is so sweet about your cat. Sounds. Like she wanted you, her mommy, to be there for her. Good luck with the new kittens.

And I was like "not right now while in a cast with no weight on it. Check back with me when I start walking and start PT!" And I was right as others on here had told me that's how it would be. I remember from trying to walk again after my first surgery (didn't have PT with that one) and it hurt so I knew with the amount of work I had this time (more than the first), it would hurt to walk and do PT and it has. Like LURCHY, I have had to go back on pain medication, not much. 1-2 a day, but I usually take one at night anyway because it's really sore by the end of the day. I'm WBAT and currently PWB working to full. Definitely ask your doctor for pain meds to have when you start PT! You'll be glad you have them!
JOYFUL--Yes, it is late, but oh well! At least they are sending you! I never got PT after my first surgery and I think that helped set up my problems that led to this surgery! Glad you love your PT and trust her! Makes a huge difference! Love mine too! I can't believe it's been 7 weeks either! Wow! Time really did go fast. A lot faster than I thought it would, but I had great pain control and help. I'm getting closer to getting off crutches! I'm walking around the house with one crutch and sometimes none if it isn't far, but when I leave the house I take both with me. It gets sore after not too long and I also have a fear of it giving out or something b/c my calf is half the size and the whole leg is weak. They are working on that in PT. Strengthening my quads and rubbing the knots out of my calf and rubbing my scar and the bottom of my foot to get it used to being touched again. My heel is SENSITIVE! Was yours? I'm still only allowed to move the ankle up and down, no side to side. I accidentally moved it to the side today without realizing it and OMG! that hurt! So I'm scared that my most painful part of PT isn't even here yet! My PT said it would get worse pain wise before it got better and I think he may be right! Yikes!!! Sorry you are back on Tramadol/Motrin. I understand. I'm taking more pain meds than I was too. Not much, just 1-2 a day.
Hi Hollywood! Sorry I didn't get this update Yes my heel was very sensitive when i started walking on it, it was very uncomfortable. I got off the crutches finally, but I'm not allowed to be on it for very long......still on sedentary rest with it, so no standing and walking for long periods. I still get wiped out pretty easily and need to rest. I'm hoping the doctor sends me to PT. I too have only up and down motion - and you're right moving it side to side....I see stars cause it hurts so much!!!
I have to start driving to my full time job this Thursday and Friday. My job is about an hour away. Thankfully I only have to do it twice a week as the other three days I work at home.
I hope you are doing well! My dad finally went to stay at my brother's house yesterday, so I finally have the house to myself.......whoo hoo!!

Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
PLANEMARK--Thanks, but don't be amazed just yet! It's up and down. One step forward and two steps back. But I will get there! The pain and swelling definitely affected my PT today unfortunately.
JOYFUL--Ok, glad to know my heel is normal then! I'm basically off crutches too. Basically. LIke around the house I don't use them, but when I'm out I take both in the car, but only use 1. It still tires out and gets sore so I use the 1 and then the other is in the car should I really get in trouble! I'm glad that your dad is gone and you have your house back to yourself! I hear ya on the tiring out! I get that way too! Good luck with driving to work on Thurs and Fri! So glad you only have to do it 1-2x/wk!
As for me (AFM)--So you know the pain and swelling I had this weekend? Well, it definitely spilled over into my PT session today. On Thursday, I had gotten past neutral in dorsiflexion (pulling toes towards the body) and today I wasn't even AT neutral and my therapist said it was definitely a lot tighter. It was sore. It wasn't as swollen today, but he still did retrograde massage from toes up to lower leg and he massaged along my scar and then came to my calf. It is rock hard tight! Like someone deposited a bunch of marbles. So he massaged my calf and the peroneal muscles (that's really what's so tight) and put me on my stomach and did long stroke massage and even got a therapy rolling pin (oh yeah!) and rolled it up and down my leg. He said that is causing my Achilles to be tight which is affecting it. He eventually with massage and gentle stretching got me back to where I was on Thurs (past neutral). He said that going down to 1 crutch and walking more probably caused the swelling.
I have a doctor's appt tomorrow to evaluate how PT is going and he gave me a progress report to take to my doctor and put on there that I had reported increase in pain and swelling and had decreased ROM due to the pain/swelling and that I had quote "numerous nodules in the gastroc and soleus muscles"! So not sure how we are going to get those out. They were there previously are a result of so many ankle sprains (the peroneal muscles fire the peroneal tendons to keep the ankle from turning over and spraining), but since I've lost so much of my calf muscle from cast and NWB, they are REALLY prominent! Be interesting to see what my OS says!! Tonight, I'm really sore because I went for a massage right before PT to work on my back/neck from crutches and he did some work on the calf muscle and then I had PT and it was stormy here today and will be tomorrow too and I think that is contributing to the achey pain I'm having. So I've just laid on the couch since I got home and now shortly, the bed!

Hi Hollywood!
So I test drove up to Annapolis today - where I work. It was very uncomfortable. Sigh, I'm fine as long as there isn't any traffic and can use the cruise control Still braking with left foot, but the stop and go traffic drove me nuts. Dreading driving on Thursday and Friday and of course I have two mandatory meetings on both days from 9am-11am so it's not like I can go in later or anything. Ugh. Foot is throbbing tonight, need to take some pain pills and get some ice out......just thought I'd check in !
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hey JOYFUL!! I'm really sorry the drive was so difficult and that on your,firstm2 days back, you have mandatory meetings so you can't go late and miss traffic! Ice that foot and rest it as much as possible. Can you ice it at work and take ibuprofen and then ice and take pain meds when you get home to get you through the driving days until you fully transition?
AFM--I was already sore from the weekend putting more weight on it and the swelling and then the painful PT session on Monday with increasing stiffness and the rolling pin, etc. So today (well Tues) I started the day on one crutch and left the other in the car in case I needed it. It was still from the previous stuff and the weather was raining hard so that didn't help. Went to my OS appt and got a great report! Ankle looks good, he definitely tightened it up! He did another comparison with my good ankle and there's def a difference! Boy did the "checking of his work" hurt!! I told him how it blew up this weekend and he said that was ok and that it will do that from time to time. He asked if I wanted to continue PT and if it was helping and I said yes and asked when I will be allowed to do inversion/eversion and he said he didn't want to do that and that those will come back on their own. He said I could move from the boot into my lace up with figure 8 strap brace! I was NOT expecting that nor do I feel quite ready! I go back in 3 more weeks and he said if everything is ok then I might can come out of the brace 24/7. He also wrote me a note saying I can work out again as long as in the brace and no inversion/eversion. Clearly I'm not ready for that now, but I know a guy who is a personal trainer and athletic trainer that I've used before and I'm hoping he can get me back in shape. Soooo....my friend and I (she still comes with me to my Appts not because I need her to anymore, but she likes going and has gotten to,know the staff so we just make a day out of it) went to a movie at the $1 theater and I left both crutches in the car and did ok. Then we ate dinner and I did the same thing. Then we saw Titanic for its 100 year anniversary and I left the crutches in the car. After the weekend, PT yesterday, the doctor testing it and walking without crutches today and the weather, I'm in pain. I had to take 2 pain pills tonight! Been a while since I had to have 2! So I figure I'm going to give it a couple days in the boot without crutches before I go into the brace. As sore as I got today, I think it will be overdoing it to ditch boot and crutches at the same time. What do you think?? I'm swollen again tonight but not as bad. I mean I always have some degree of swelling but this a little more than that. My big toe joint where it meets my foot at the ball is still very sore and stiff and I can't walk normally or push off with my toes but they said they'd work on that in PT along with the painful knots in my calf and peroneals. So all in all great visit and report card! Just painful! No pain, no gain right?
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Sounds like your doing good Hollywood!
I went to my appointment today and it was Cast off day! Ya hoo. I must admit, I was pretty scared after reading about it hurting when trying to use the boot, but I was also prepared. Used my crutches to walk and put minimal weight on my boot foot. I think as long as you dont push it, it will be good right? I do want to try to put more pressure on it little by little so I can ditch those torture sticks, or Crutches as some might call them. LOL I was also prepared to ask him for more pain medicine so I could be ready and got more today.
I feel like this is a whole new adventure having the boot. I got home a little bit ago and still need to go shave this hairy leg of mine. But I did have a question on the sterile strips that are still on my ankle. The Surgeon did not pull them off today. So should I go ahead and pull them off when i take my bath, or are they suppose to "fall off" on their own. I really want to wash off the awful purple marker that is all over my ankle.. LOL
Thanks as always for the support and answers, advise, understandings.. LOL
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Hey! Yay for getting your cast off! Woohoo! Don't you feel liberated? You did the EXACT same thing I did 2 weeks ago when I got my cast off. I knew I couldn't put weight on my foot right away and my doctor said I wouldn't be able to do it that day and we were both right! LOL! I also put most of the weight on the crutches and just a little weight on the boot. I transitioned rather slowly (partly because my husband was scared for me to come off crutches, we didn't know each other when I had my first surgery! LOL) to FWB. I actually still was on 1 crutch yesterday although part of yesterday and all today I went without them. I am SORE! But you will get there! As far as the steri-strips, if your doctor didn't remove them, he probably wants them to fall off in the shower. My doctor didn't take mine off either and said it was fine to let them fall off. However, they were still COMPLETELY intact, not even peeling, and 2 days later in PT, my therapist took them off so he could fully evaluate my ankle. I say let them fall off in the shower. If they start peeling you can "help" them along. Glad you got pain meds! Did your doctor give you any problems with that? Did he give you the same stuff you have been on? When does PT start? Good luck and hang in there!
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
I forgot to update on myself! I thought I was on a different thread! LOL! So today I went all day without crutches, but stayed in my boot. It went well really! I didn't even think I was going to have pain until about 7 tonight, it hit me like a ton of bricks. All of a sudden, it really started throbbing in the area of the ATFL. When I got home and took the boot off, it was swollen more than usual again so I really this my episode last weekend was attributed to the first time I started putting a LOT of weight on my ankle. I just hope it doesn't interfere with PT tomorrow. But it's really aching and swollen tonight. I iced it some and am about to take pain meds and go to bed.
Re: Cast off! Back from my 3rd post-op visit-Update!
Oh so sorry the ankle was swollen and in pain Hollywood, That's my fear for today but so far so good. As far as the doctor yesterday, he offered up the pain meds before I could ask and gave me percocet again, which worked great so I was happy about that. I still have two weeks before my first appointment at PT, so I have some time to acquaint myself with my new boot.. LOL. My ankle is doing much better today that I would have ever dreamed. I started with two crutches and found that if I moved to one crutch I was still pretty stable and had very minimal pain. This seems too soon but it feels pretty good so I am just trying it out. I am prepared for pain later on today as most of you have experienced. I find pushing off to be too painful and my steps are short and sweet but it feels good to move around a bit more freely. My sterile strips are definitely on there tight so I wont mess with them until they start to come off. I also got out my lace up/figure 8 brace and wore it to bed last night because I was afraid of twisting it. It felt even better when I woke up and was less stiff than it was yesterday.
I've pretty much finished up the few chores I set out to do today and will relax for the rest of the day, but man it was nice to walk around for once!! Here's to hoping I dont suffer too much pain later from moving around so much!! LOL

Hi Hollywood
Well I drove to work today - over an hour drive. I was in so much pain and so uncomfortable when I got there that I only lasted 6 hours and finally came home and slept for a few hours. My foot was pounding, throbbing and the whole thing felt like it was on fire all day. So discouraged today. It is really swollen tonight as well....ugh. Have a call into the doctor's office for meds, etc. Just a very discouraging day and of course people around me have their own opinions about what I should & should not be doing and maybe I need a new doctor, etc. wanted to smack them all I'm going to bed early tonight and just gonna try to sleep and get up really, really early to get into work before the traffic gets bad. I'm fine as long as it's not stop and go traffic!
