I had calcaneal osteotomy, kidner procedure, cotton wedge osteotomy, and gastroc recession surgery in Feb. '11. Now 16 months later I'm still trying to fight through scar tissue. I have a total of five scars from the surgery and two of them in particular are still giving me trouble. The one on the outside of my ankle from the calcaneal osteotomy and the gastroc recession on my calf. I've been taking PT since April '11 - I was later diagonsed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) in this leg which is why I'm still in PT this far out. There are times that it feels so tight and painful. I can feel the scar tissue inside the bottom of my foot moving around.
Has anyone else experienced this so far out from surgery? I don't know what else to do but am open to new ideas.
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
HI,
I feel for you, no I haven't had anywhere near the surgery you have had,
but, i did have 2 metatarsel nerves removed, with 2 surgeries on left foot, and still in pain, I found the help I needed here on Healthboards,,, I found a certified Active release tecnique, which stands for A.R.T. this tecnoque BREAKS down scar tissue and now after a year my foot is getting better, my Orthopod, surgeon never mentioned post-op and thank God I did my OWN research , look on website to find a A.r.T. near you, it really does work, and yes, it is a liitl painful at first,, hope this helps some,,
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
When I was finally able to full weight bear in a boot about 11 weeks post op, scar tissue was a problem. my pt did graston. The first few times were Painful but it made a huge difference

does your PT do the graston technique? seems to work better than manual PT alone. I think its the gold standard for scar tissue relief beyond more surgery.
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
no, I am seeing a chiropractor to break up scar tissue, A.R.T, but, thanks for telling me about the graston technique, I will research that..is it painful?
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
Its a little sore but manageable. Basically they take this little tool and rub it over the scar. you can hear it crackling (feel it too) when it hits the scar tissue. its supposed to break it up at a microscopic level so your body can absorb it and it doesn't come back so fast.

Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
Hi,
are your scar from foot sugery, if so, what type of surgery? I have been trying the
Active release technique A.R.T. it is a type of deep tissue massage, not painful, but I am wondering if you are referring to the Graston technique when instruments are used to break up scar tissue,, how long have you been doing this and is it working for you?good luck to you,,,
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
ART can work wonders. I had it done in physical therapy after my calcaneal osteotomy. I also had dry needle therapy on my calf to work knots. Painful as hell but very much worth it.
Re: Scar Tissue Months after Flat Foot Reconstruction
I have had 5 foot surgeries and most of my complications are due to too much scar tissue. I only recently learned of the Garston technique , so only went for about a month (8 times) before the surgeon recommended that he cut the tendon and then I will get into PT (Graston again) alomost immediately, to keep the scar tissue down. the deep tissue was not cutting it for me, so to speak..
