Metatarsal stress fracture foot pain...

I have been diagnosed with a stress fracture in my 3rd metatarsal which I believe came from continued running in old sneakers.

I had the symptoms for a month(due to waiting for appts) before I was finally given official diagnosis from MRI and put in walker boot and on crutches.

In the beginning, I was experimenting a couple different types of PAIN/discomfort. One being pain on top of foot/ankle area when walking. Also, pain with movement and especially standing(for more than a minute) Resting and sitting down lessens the discomfort.
I am currently at over 4 weeks into my healing and noticed the top of foot pain is probably healing and some "baby steps" are taking place. HOWEVER, the part the worries me and concerns me is I have had NO diminished or lessened PAIN when moving about(even with crutches) and standing. For example, I am in quite a bit of pain brushing my teeth unless I am sitting down.

IS this normal? after over 4 weeks? is this something else going on in addition to my fracture?

Whether I am on crutches or just the boot I experience this same standing/ movment pain. It seems the BLOOD flows down to my foot when standing and is the cause of my pain. Anyone else experience this?

Re: Metatarsal stress fracture foot pain...

Well, standing does increase blood flow to the injured area, which increases swelling and pain, that's pretty normal for a foot injury. For now, just try to keep your foot elevated as much as possible, and ice it several times a day. If it doesn't seem to be getting better, tell your doctor at the next scheduled follow up.
