So glad to have found this board! I'm scheduled for OCD surgery (5x9x5mm) in a week. Getting information from my os is like pulling teeth! I can't express how irritating it is that I'm lucky to get ten minutes of his time. He has an excellent rep as well as reviews, but the guy has the personality of a doorknob. When I asked how long I'd be NWB, he said "maybe 2-6 weeks." Umm, can we narrow that down by a month? I do understand there are variables, but shouldn't he be able to give a better idea than that?
After almost 2 years of this mess, my opposite knee and hip hurt daily from the limping/walking funny. I started with a podiatrist. Ages later with no relief, I went to an orthopedic. He sent me for an MRI, and promptly referred me to an ankle specialist. When I finallllllly got in to see him of course I had to go through more cortisone and waiting. So he could see first hand I guess that it wasn't going to work?
I've had probably 20 injections over the years in various joints...this time I had my first cortisone flare. O. M. G. that hurts!!) Long story short, time to fix this!
Anyway, after reading a lot of the outcomes here, I'm hopeful that in a few weeks (perpetual positive thinker...) I'll actually feel like walking again!

No idea how long, I had a different injury and was NWB 12 weeks. It is also not a matter of when you feel like walking, but when you are cleared. For both my injuries they xrayed before allowing me to walk.
Also if you have a problem with pain, you are going to have to get over it. Losing weight, if you have any extra is good for the joints too.

I am scheduled to have surgery on 8/21 for OCD. My surgeon said that I would be non-weight bearing for 6 weeks followed by 2 weeks in a boot. I believe it depends on what they are doing. I am having it scoped with drilling and debridement. Did your doctor tell you what he/she will be doing? It will be extremely important to follow your doctor's orders. If he says not to walk (non-weight bearing) then do not even try to walk.
I would plan for a minimum of 4 weeks, but more likely 5 or 6, then a boot with crutch assistance for several weeks, then just a boot after that.
I asked my surgeon about remaining NWB as long as 8 weeks if need be because I fell on it last weekend and was worried that I might need to give it longer. He said that 4 or 5 weeks would be plenty, and if I really wanted to go for 6, that was my choice, but anything beyond that really wouldn't make much difference.
He said that the latest research does not show any longterm advantage to total NWB beyond 4-5 weeks.
Thanks everyone for your replies!
I'm having it scoped with drilling and debridement also.
This is my 6th surgery, though the first involving something
I walk on lol I've been sometimes maybe a little hard headed
and pushed myself, but I'm thinking that's easier to do with
an upper extremity.
He said there was a possibility of needing some sort of pin, but
I'm hoping for the best instead of expecting the worst.
Just found out my my grandmother is coming to stay for 2 weeks,
so this shouldn't be too bad.
There is a really good thread at the beginning of the "foot problem" board called "Tactics for coping while non-weight bearing". It gives many good ideas of how to prepare for the period of being non-weight bearing. It is good that you will have help. It can be difficult at times. This will be my third foot surgery! Good luck.
