Oh absolutely it can. It will show what's going on on the inside of your ankle and no surgeon or PT can do that to that degree. They may can do certain exam tests that will tell them a lot of what to zero in on, but they can't see inside without a scope or open operation. MRIs are great for soft tissue injuries, although I admit they aren't always conclusive. It also depends greatly on who is reading it. Make sure you are with a board certified foot/ankle orthopedic surgeon, not a general OS or a podiatrist. Also, have they done an X-ray of your ankle and lower leg? I ask this because generally with a high ankle sprain, the AITFL is torn and will cause a separation that can be seen on X-ray between the tibia and fibula. I've had 2 ankle surgeries and MRIs before each one.
