Surgery day is finally here! I've been up at 2am the last 3 nights but hopefully I'll be so tired it will help me to sleep afterward. Having 4 procedures this afternoon (spring ligament repair, FDL transfer, heel slide and Achilles lengthening). I hope to get out tonight and on the way home tomorrow (6 hr drive) before the nerve block wears off!
Sorry to ramble...thought I'd sleep more tonight cuz we stayed up late for Monday Night Football...that was one crazy game!
Thanks for all the support the last few weeks.
Ginger
Best wishes for your surgery, and a big hug as well!
Be sure on your 6 hour trip home that you keep your ankle elevated and iced as much as possible so you aren't ready for the mental institution when you get home.
Let us know how you're progressing!

All went well. Back at hotel and plan to leave as early as possible tomorrow to beat DC traffic and end of nerve block. Thanks for all the good wishes. Will post tomorrow when home. Surgery was only 2hrs.

Glad to hear everything went okay Ginger! Ice and elevation is oh so important. Definitely don't want to miss any pain meds for the first week or so. Take it easy!

My friend didn't sleep well last night so we are leaving a few hours later...but I could feel the nerve block starting to wear off around 2am...it's now 6am....Yowza!!
Sorry you didnt sleep well. Are you keeping up the pain meds? I know my nerve block hadnt worn off but they told me to take them every 3 hours. I wiggled my toes all the time. I was happy that I finally could move them. No one told me not to and when they put my cast on I told them I was doing it and the assistant didnt say anything. Lets hope it didnt damage anything. Now that I have the boot I can only wiggle them when the boot is off. I do miss the cast. It was smaller and lighter than the boot and my toes were free. The only benefit is showereing and keeping up with hygiene. I guess I am older than most of you ladies (post menopausal) because even though I shave regularly I did not grow a jungle. I have never had furry legs thank God. I only get stubble. I did lose muscle butnot too much shriveling and my summer tan still looks good on both legs. God I miss summer already! Take good care and take your meds.

Like Prico said--really keep up with your pain meds for the first week or 2. When my nerve block wore off, it was one of the worst pains I had ever experienced. By keeping on a regular schedule (even at night, wake up to take them!) it made it better. Even if you don't feel like you need them at that moment, take it, because its hard once you get off schedule. After the first week, you can start to taper back if you feel like you can, but other that that...as often as possible!
As for toes, with my surgery, I couldn't wiggle them for a while afterwards. I can now, and do it often. Sometimes it feels good, other times it causes more pain. I don't think you can mess anything up (but I'm not a doctor!). My doc has me wiggle my toes now as a gauge of how I'm healing.
Good luck on your trip home! I had a 6 hour drive after my initial injury...elevation!!! So important.

Sorry to hear you're in pain. That's the worst part. I wiggled my toes all the time but I did not have any ligament work or anything like that. I still have a lot of nerve damage in my fourth toe on that foot. It tingles all the time. It was very sensitive to touch at first. I was fortunate and only had about a 25 minute drive home but I took extra pillows and packed them in around my foot to keep it from moving and had it propped up. I was still very loopy on the meds and had a hard time crutching into the house. Sit back and relax and try to sleep through the trip.
Take care!

Very glad to hear that your surgery went well. Hope the return trip isn't painful and goes without any issues. Please keep posting on how you are doing. We are going to be going through similar recoveries it looks like.

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. The ride home was I uneventful, my bladder held up like a champ so I didn't have to get out til we got home haha. Boy, laying(lying?) down in the back like that you sure do feel every little bump in the road.
I'm taking meds every 4 hrs (5mg oxycodone)but my foot feels like I'm wearing a cement shoe that is waaaay too tight. Dr's office said today would be the worst of it. I'm hoping that's true cuz it is quite painful.
Took a little turn on the knee walker when I got in, I think it's going to help a lot.
It took me about 20 min to type that little bit...I think that means it's time for a catnap.
Thanks again!

Glad you made it home without incident Ginger! Hope you get some good sleep at home in your own bed! Just remember to take your time getting around. Never good to fall.

Well, I'm glad to say that today is better than yesterday. Still significant pain but it seems to be on the downswing. Going to try to start easing off the meds. And I've only had one good scare fall wise. Maybe a shower tomorrow!
Glad you are feeling a little better today. Did you get the ok for showering? I mentioned before I was told not for two weeks but I onlycould wait 4 days. It is still hard to get in and out but I manage every day and it gets easier. Dont rush off the meds if you are still in pain. Wait for the pain to wane first. Have a great day. It is a gorgeous sunny fall day here. I think I will drive the doggy to the Dunkin Donuts drive thru. He has a girlfriend there who gives him free munckin donut holes! Yay! Spoiled puppy boy!
