I just had the sesamoid bone removed 2 days ago...the one closest to the next toe. It was very degenerated and also had some cyst growing around and in that area. I have had pain for 2 yrs on the bottom of my foot and it wasn't clear in xrays. I had both joints on top of the big toe that were growing extra bone and the doc removed those twice (4 surgeries). On the 2nd surgery on the left toe, the area had grown a cyst. That was not the bad foot.
So, this week, he decided to explore the right foot near the bottom where my problem was. I had been having from 4 to 6 cortisone shots/year on that area. He found the right side sesamoid bone very degenerated so he removed it along with soft tissue cyst. I am two days from the surgery and I am to go back next week for another check. I've already been checked once.
What I have noticed is not pain but tingling sensation and an odd, empty feeling in that area...guess it's the tissue removed. When I removed the bandage, I didn't notice what they call a "claw" but it was the other situation, the big toe looked like it wanted to move to the left or away from the other toes. I have taped it to the other toes and re-wrapped it and will call him tomorrow about it. I don't want that toe to move away because that will be strange looking.
I am 60 and was a hairdresser for close to 30 years. My feet and legs never bothered me while I was working but I retired from that business about 6 years and took a desk job. That was when I began to notice joints going stiff and having problems. I have also had both palms of hands operated on..."Dupytren's Syndrom".
I think the best thing is to keep moving. I look and feel much young than 60 and you'd never know I've had these problems because I never missed a day of work.
I can only answer for me but I've had no pain, except the 1st night about 2:00 am I woke to pain because the feeling came back and I didn't take a pain pill before going to bed. I haven't needed any since.
