Re: lots of Pain (tarsal coalition) - Need Advice/Help
Hello.
I'm a 39 year old male with tarsal coalitions in both my feet. I was diagnosed at birth, saw all kinds of specialists as a child, etc.
I was given the option of having the fusion surgery, when I was 16 years. It would have meant that I would have been in a wheel chair for one year (back then). My family and I decided against the surgery. My specialist told me that I may someday be in a wheelchair because of my condition.
I fought it as long as I could. I have not lived a day without excruciating pain. My podiatrist described my pain as "walking on two broken ankles 24/7."
Now, I'm on full Disability because of my feet, legs, back and neck pain and emotional side effects that went with all that pain.
In addition to my coalitions, I also have a condition in which the blood vessels in my feet have grown narrow, which mimics the effects of diabetes. So, it feels like my feet are on fire... even if they're soaking in cold water.
I found this post, when I decided I was going to look into having my feet amputated. I have, perhaps, another 30 to 40 years left on this planet. I won't be putting up with this pain that entire length of time.
Best wishes to everyone who has suffered with this god-forsaken condition. I think we would all be much happier, healthier people, if they would have just taken our feet at birth... rather than make us suffer our entire lives with them.

Re: lots of Pain (tarsal coalition) - Need Advice/Help
You sound like you have a great attitude. I had a great attitude once... until this burning feeling started because of my poor circulation.
I guess, after 39 years of dealing with these feet, I'm all out of hope. All I want for Christmas is for someone to hack off my feet, just below the knees.
It just sounds like Heaven to me.
But, I hope you can enjoy your life as much as possible before you get to my stage.
When I was 19, I climbed a mountain, which was pretty cool. But, I'd trade that memory for having no feet in a heartbeat.

According to my recent research, 660,000 people in the world have full coalitions (all 7 tarsal bones grown together) in at least one foot. So, you're definitely not alone. The pain keeps us isolated, though. It's difficult to enjoy life when it hurts all the time.
