Thank you so much Erin. I appreciate it. My nerves are getting to me and I can't even think of food now. Oh well, I'm sure that will pass - hahahahahaha What is a cryo/cuff? not sure what that is. The only thing I know when my PA called to see what type of anesthsia I will be having is that the doctor always does regional and they said general. I am a little afraid of general.
I was a little afraid of general too, I had never had it before, but honestly, it went really smoothly. Apparently the amnesic effects of anesthesia work really on me, because once they gave me the sedative, my memory is really foggy. I don't remember when they put the nerve block catheters in (I remember talking to the anesthegiolist about what they were going to do, they started, and then I woke up and had the blocks in. I also don't remember anything after they told me they were ready, I said bye to my husband, and they started rolling me out of the room to the OR. Next thing I know, I'm waking up in recovery. I was annoyed at first because I thought I was still in the pre-op room and thought I hadn't had surgery yet. I looked down at my foot and saw the huge splint on it and realized it was done! Then I heard a nurse say it was 1:30. They had taken me back to surgery around 9:30, so I was shocked how much time had passed (my surgery itself was just over 3 hours). I'd also suggest, if you are concerned at all about nausea or vomiting (I have a HUGE vomiting aversion), tell the anesthegiolist. I mentioned it in passing, they gave me two drugs in my IV to control nausea, they said they'd give me another during surgery, and they sent me home with a patch behind my ear to help with any side effects once I was home, or nausea from the pain meds. I had not one bit of nausea, it was awesome!
Thank you so much NC girl. What you wrote was very helpful and I can tell my husband about the length of time too so he knows. I'm glad they will give you a sedative before to help ease the nerves. I have to calm down because I am just a bear right now and everything is making me upset and mad probably because of all this. Thanks for taking the time to help. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

I too am scheduled for surgery but not until 1/31--at Albany Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately I have many days left in which to get nervous. May I ask how comfortable you are with your doctor?
I heard that Dr. Dixon is the best! Good luck. Wow what a small world. My daughter had surgery with him from a broken ankle last October and ran the Friehofer's run this last past June. I have been seeing him for a very long time. He is with Northeast Orthopedics. Ok Iwill get your through your nerves and let you know the experience. Please keep in touch. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
I've been to Schdy ortho (telling me healing takes time), capital district ortho (doctor's response was "I'm stumped") and now to Dr. Dixon at NE ortho who seems to be knowledgeable and recognizes that something is wrong. He sent me first for orthotics ($500) but that did not work so he decided that surgery was the last resort. I only wish it could have been scheduled sooner as I am not a patient person and waiting another 38 days (yes, I'm counting) is going to be awful.
Do you think your surgery was similar to mine? i.e. a2 pttt reconstruction, flexor digitorum longus to posterior tibial tendon transfer, Achilles lengthening, allograft?
Yes Dr. Dixon is very knowledgeable I did not like Schenectady since the doctor really was no help when my daughter broke her ankle until over a year later Dr. Dixon helped her. I am having something very similar A2Ptt reconstruction, PTAL allograft, Flexor digitorum Longus to Posterior Tibial Tendon transfer. yes it will be a long recovery and I am a little sad about returning to work I can't believe we have the same doctor and the same procedure coming up. Only 2 more day. At least I had the holidays to keep me busy. Wednesday I will be here cleaning and putting some holiday decorations away. Keep in touch.
How long did you have to wait between deciding to have the surgery and the date of surgery? I was hoping mine could have been sooner and was surprised to be booked almost two months later.
Cinder--another question for you...I had an appt w/Dr D when he suggested surgery and advised that the surgical scheduling would call me. She called, I'm scheduled for 1/31. Since then I have not had any further conversations with anyone at NE. Did you have an appt in which more info was provided?
Good Morning and Merry Christmas. Dr. Dixon is extremely busy and you always have to wait months to see him and I know booking surgery is the same. I was originally scheduled for November after seeing him in August, but that had to get changed to this date. So yes he is booking out months in advance. So many people try to get in to see him and have to wait a long time. So keep that appointment I believe he is worth it. I woke up this morning, however, with a bad cold so I hope things don't have to get pushed back. I will see how I do the rest of the day and I guess talk with them tomorrow. I had nightmares about this after everything is in place with work and home I would get sick.
You will just get paperwork in the mail as to make your pre-op appt with your family doctor and the hospital will call you a week or so before with an interview over the phone for your history. Other than that you will not hear anything. I haven't seen Dr. D since August. To top it off, my son is scheduled for surgery with northeast ortho on the 31st of December for his shoulder. Wow we are really doing good here. My daughter will stay with me and my husband will take him. My other son had shoulder surgery with northeast in July. We are keeping them in business.

Cinder a cryo/cuff is a 1 gallon bucket you put ice and water in it and it has a tube that Goes from bucket to a boot and the boot fills with ice cold water u put the boot over the splint its a lot better then an ice pack. I love mine!! If your nervous ask for a pill before u go to the hospital they gave me one but I was calm as can be the day of surgery, but just in case I told them I needed something to calm my nerves.

Surgery on November 9th,2012. I had extra bone removed, bone spur shaved down, calf muscle lengthened and a titanium wedge put in.
I had to wait quite a while to get into my surgeon too because the end of the year everyone has met their deductibles and are scheduling. I hope you stay healthy cinder! Drink a lot of OJ and take some vitamin C. Multivitamins too! Get some airborne at the drug store. Our drug stores are open here. Take care!
~Kimberly
I can't take a multi-vitamin because they told me to stop it 10 days before surgery. I am drinking orange juice and my throat feels a little less scratchy. Everyone just left so I can relax a bit and hopefully tomorrow just gear up.

Good luck tomorrow Cinder! I'll be thinking of you. Please post (or have someone do it for you) ASAP so we know you're doing alright.
Lots of love...don't be scared. The Lord will be holding your hand.

Thanks so much Ginger. What kind words and I don't think I could do this without your support and the others. They just called and I have a really late appointment tomorrow. I have to be there at 11:15 for a 2:00 surgery. So very late. But we are expecting a snow storm here. I will take your comfort with me to the hospital. Thanks again. Thanks for thinking about me and comforting me. It means a lot. Hope you are doing well too.

Good luck, cinder. You're going to do just fine. Tell them when you get there that you're nervous. I know the nurses are wonderful . They're going to care for you beautifully. And remember to take care of yourself. Don't be afraid to speak up. They are there to help you. I was in the hospital for five days and it was easy. Keep us all posted . Will be thinking of you.
