How did it go? Your mental health is as important as your physical! And if sewing can help you relax, then scoot up those steps. I had no choice and did stairs from day one... Sometimes sitting, sometimes with crutches. It is doable and once you figure it out its safe. Just make sure you're never in a hurry while on the stairs.

I am two weeks post op. Staples are out, cast is on. My husband thinks I should not go up/down stairs. I'm willing to crawl on my butt but he thinks it is too dangerous and I might injure the foot. I would so love to go down to my sewing room in the basement.
Has anyone else after foot surgery gone up/down stairs and did you have any issues doing so? Please, I just want to see a different set of four walls!!!
Hi Ddill,
How are you doing? I hope you are doing good. I go back to the doctor on March 5th and hope to go into my brace and sneaker, but this weight bearing is really difficult for me and I am having a lot of pain in my heel. Hoping to get through this. I go up and down the stairs on my knee if you can. You place the knee down where the foot you had surgery onto the step and use your other leg to get up and down. It really works, assuming you have good knees. You just use your leg to go up and down. Hope this helps. Keep me informed as to your progress.
I went up my glorious sweeping staircase the second night after surgery. My bedroom is up there, and the shower, and I refused to live my life in the family room on the sofa all the time! I go up and down on my butt, sometimes using a knee to go up. My husband brings up/down the knee walker. Kind of works out okay. Very tiring, but I make the most of small victories. And when you are going to be NWB for a very extended period, you need those. Sewing is a great pastime. I decided to work on our taxes this afternoon. It is productive and challenging, and takes my mind away from the fact that the kitchen is not really properly cleaned, laundry waiting to be done, vacuuming undone etc. Tomorrow I am going out to walk the dogs. I have to do it, home alone, and they cannot wait indefinitely. I will keep them on a leash and they are good, but it is daunting. So I look on the bright side, surgery last Friday, and less than a week later I am dog-walking. Perfect. I do wish there was a fast road to success with PTTD surgery tho.

Yes I agree you have to have a lot of patience and I have spent many up and down days throughout this process. We all will get there eventually. I am so impressed that you can dog walk. Way to go. That's amazing. Sounds familiar. My husband brings my knee scooter up for me too in the evening since our bedrooms are upstairs too. Keep healing and keep up the positive attitude because it really is what gets you through this healing process. Yes I sewed some quilts for a lady who does quilts for the community. I hand sewed the edges with blind stitiches and that really kept me busy for many weeks. I did about 8 of them.
Wow, Cinder, sewing all those quilts was really productive. I think our mental state is heavily influenced by our disabilities, but I am really trying to look at "abilities" instead. Otherwise it is distressing, and I am not going to give in to that. We lost our roof in Superstorm Sandy, so I spoke to the roofer and insurance adjuster again today about some new fee charges, and tomorrow I am going to continue my search for a good chimney person who can fix that too (same reason). Amazing what you can do without going outside.
It is a long time to be altering our routine but as I said, count victories, enjoy the things we can. Pretend there is not a huge throbbing dead weight on the end of my leg!

So sorry about your house. Superstorm Sandy was so horrible and my heart goes out to everyone who had suffered this terrible storm. We were lucky and didn't get hardly anything here. We have relatives in Staten Island did our best to help them as much as we could. Yes I have been doing a lot more online shopping and things from the house that I never did before. It fascinates me how I just hit "send" and the items come to my doorstep some days later. I never did that - I like to shop with my daughter all the time. I actually am saving my husband some money so he likes that I am home because I don't "impulse" buy. Keep in touch and we can compare our progress. At least with this board you never feel alone and get some many wonderful tips and suggestions and comfort. The comfort is so wonderful and helps with the healing.

My suggestion for stairs - since I'm NWB, I'm doing the bench tip up on my but thing. I put stool from the tub at the top of the steps. Getting from the stool to the floor is easier than dropping directly to the ground. It's also easier to pull myself up on the top step and sit on the stool then get up from there.
My battle has been that when the stool is close enough to the edge that I can reach it, Mom spazzes out. When it's further from the edge so she's happy (not my top priority, hehe) it's harder to reach & ironically more lkely that I'll fall.
