Is is my Gallbladder?

Hi there!

I have been experiencing several back pain in my right shoulder blade for a little over 8 months. I had never considered that it could be my gallbladder until I was speaking with my mother in law yesterday about the pain I was experiencing. That's when she told me she had had the same pain before having to get her Gallbladder removed. I personally thought the pain was exercise related, but the fact that it hasn't gone away has given me concern. I started to do a bit of research into this and I have MANY of the symptoms, but I never knew they could all be related (acid reflux, stomach issues, pain in right side, pain when taking deep breaths, skin rash, exhaustion, lack of energy...and the list goes on). I have contacted my doctor for an appointment, but haven't gotten one scheduled yet. It would be great to finally be able to put a name to what all this pain is.

Since the pain has been there for 8+ months with little let up, do you think they would recommend removal of the Gallbladder (if that's the problem)? I am an athlete and since this pain started I have gained 30+ pounds sadly and for no reason (same diet/exercise routine).

Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Re: Is is my Gallbladder?

If you have stones at all, they will take it out. If the gb is thickened, has sludge, is functioning out of the normal 35-75% range, they'll take it out.

Re: Is is my Gallbladder?

I wish there was a clear-cut layman way to determine if the GB or GB duct is a problem. Since the GB is activated when you eat fat, then gets hurts when it gets "inflamed". After a GB attack, there's can be soreness. I recommend eating a fatty steak at bedtime and see if you feel the GB soreness around under your lower right back rib cage next day. I would do it but I already have. Good luck!

Re: Is is my Gallbladder?

Your doctor will probably order a CT scan and possibly a HIDA scan to check your gallbladder.

I just had mine removed and had very few symptoms, NO STONES, and the CT scan showed thickening and sludge. I didnt think it was "that" serious and questioned the need for surgery, but went through with it since I trust my GI doctor and surgeon.

Turned out my GB was actually necrotic- the tissue was dead, it was on its way to Gangrene, which could have resulted in a life or death situation most likely in the very near future.

Now that its out, its taking some getting used to eating differently, but its only been 3 weeks. For the most part, I am doing really well!

Let us know what happens when you see the doctor! And good luck!
