gallbladder sludge

Hi

I am 48 years old male . I had an ultrasound where they found sludge in the gallbladder and maybe some stones . They are not sure . The guy who did the ultra sound suggested to see a gastroenterologist and have a diet and make the ultrasound again in 3 months . the surgeon at the hospital advise me to remove the gallbladder because it is dangerous for the future . I am bit confused on what to do . Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Kostas

Re: gallbladder sludge

Hi. Many people have had similar problems recently. Myself as well.

My doctor found sludge in my gallbladder also on the ultrascan- and again with the CT Scan and my surgeon also told me to get it removed asap..

Gallbladders can burst/ rupture. If they do, it is life threatening and they have to do a full incision across your belly to remove it. If you have it done under non life threatening conditions, it can be done (usually) laproscopically with 4 small incisions on your tummy. I did not have stones, but stones increase the chances of it rupturing.

I had mine out on April 21st- less than 2 weeks ago. I am glad it is over and well on my way to recovery. My story is there on the gallbladder forum if you want to read it.

I would follow the advice of your surgeon as you really dont want this happening when you least expect it or to be in a life threatening situation.

Best to you!
MSNik

Re: gallbladder sludge

Thank you for your answer , I appreciate . All the doctors I have asked they say to go for it in order to avoid any problems in the future , as you mention o your reply . It is still confusing for me because after a research I have done on the internet , everywhere it says that if you don't have any symptoms no therapy ( not to mention surgery ) is recommended .

Thank you

Re: gallbladder sludge

Hi again. Please take a look at my post entitled Update from MSNik after seeing GI and Surgeon.

I had no symptoms. I had very little pain and it usually resolved on its own within a few hours. I was also terrified of surgery. I went through with it but even as they were wheeling me into the ER, I thought about stopping it.

Turned out that my cystic duct, the duct which connects the liver to the gallbladder and allows Bile in- was necrotic. The tissue was dead. The next step is it would have been gangrene which might have killed me. There was absolutely NO way to tell this from the ultrasound, MRI or CT Scan and since I had so few symptoms, it was really hard for me to wrap my head around taking out a "perfectly fine organ" or so I thought.

I trusted my Surgeon. He was positive that it didnt look right and that the symptoms were from the gallbladder. He couldnt have been more right and in making me do this, might have actually saved my life.

Dont believe everything you read online. Some of it are horror stories which are made up, none of it is verified or screened. The only thing you can do is read about real people's experiences here and then trust your doctor/ surgeon.

I guarantee that you can live normally without a gallbladder and yeah- surgery stinks. The recovery though, is NOT the end of the world! One week off and Im back at work and pretending it never happened. Almost 2 weeks since surgery and my incisions are already healing and look great- and Im back to eating more and more each day. You'll be sorry if you dont do it and you have an emergency, but I dont think youll be sorry if you do it.

Since my surgery, I have now met at least 25 people who tell me they had theirs out. I havent heard a single person say they regret it.

Me, especially!

MSnik

Re: gallbladder sludge

Hi
I had my gallbladder removed after horrendous attacks of pain/sickness and ultrasound showed sludge and thickened diseased walls
The Consultant said it was no longer working as a gallbladder and needed to come out
