checking in

Hello fellow post choly survivors!

I just wanted to check in on all of you to see how you are all recovering?!

I am having a horrible night. Tonight, for the first time I decided to eat an actual meal with my family... steak, baked potatoe and a very small helping of iceburg lettuce. Not eating salad has been killing me! Im not sure if it was the piece of steak (first time eating red meat) or the lettuce, but I am sitting here doubled over in pain..

I took a digestive enzyme, Digest Gold, with dinner..but it doesnt seem to be helping. Im having pain on the opposite side, towards the Illium, which may mean that this is completely unrelated to the removal of my Gb.

Any thoughts or suggestions? And, how are the rest of you doing?

MSNik

Re: checking in

Is it a gas pain??? That would be normal especially with raw foods you haven't had in a while. Greens build a lot of gas.

Keep in mind also that the bile duct normally sort of takes over for the gb when it's removed. However, yours was necrotic so that isn't working as well as it should.

Re: checking in

Hi Titchou,
Thanks for the thoughts! No, its not gas pains, its actually real severe pain which feels like I want to throw up!

Since both my cystic duct and bile duct were bad,..I hadnt thought of that. Im also not sure what in the world I can do about it!

Next time, I will try red meat without the lettuce to try to pinpoint which one made me feel like this!

Thanks!
Nik

Re: checking in

I'm not sure either. Maybe check with your GI doc for thoughts on it.

Re: checking in

Oh no MSNik, so sorry to hear about your night!

Are you feeling better this morning? If it's not gas pain-I wonder what else it could be? Is this the first time eating more fat? Maybe it just shocked your system.

I still havent had red meat-a nice medium rare steak sounds DELICIOUS. Or a cheeseburger. I've had 2 ground turkey breast burgers and I even put cheese on them, but it's just not the same as a hamburger!

Last night we went to hibachi and celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary with my family. My plan was to order white rice and a side of chicken, but we sat at the hibachi and I gave in and ate hibachi chicken, fried rice, and noodles. I almost cleaned my whole plate before I realized it! I also had a martini and the waitress brought us fried ice cream to celebrate. I took a couple bites but dairy has always been an issue with me.

The only thing I noticed was a little pain where my gallbladder was, but nothing anywhere near the pain i would have had if I ate that before.

Hopefully you are feeling better and keep trying to eat more fatty things. Up until this week, when I ate fatty things, I would get sooo bloated and my stomach would be rumbling with gas all night long. Now that I'm a few days over a month post op (crazy how fast that went!), the bloating is starting to settle down after meals.

Keep us updated,
abrown

Re: checking in

Hi Abrown! Congratulations on your anniversary! Its kind of funny, but my husband and I almost always go to the same Hibachi place on our anniversary too. This year, we went to a Fondue place...which is where they think I got Ecoli and this whole nonsense started, escalating me to the GI doctor, the tests which showed the thickening/ slude and eventually surgery. Getting EColi might have saved my life since I had no idea that my Gb was in such rough shape! Remember, I had necrotic tissue all throughout my digestive track!

Anyway, I feel alittle better this morning. All I have eaten is a non fat yogurt. But, its almost lunchtime and Im about ready to try something.

You could be right...it could be the first "fat" or "red meat' which did it...but the steak I ate was Bison...very low in fat. but, still over the 3 grams they recommend. I think it is 7 grams for an 8 oz sirloin; which is still a whole lot better than cow! Nevertheless, Im not in a hurry to try it again!!

As for burgers...my solution has been to eat Bison burgers ( I keep my freezer stocked wth Bison which I get shipped to me from the midwest) they only have 3 grams of fat in a 1/4 lb patty and also to eat Portabello burgers (found in my local supermarket in the refrigerator case) 1 gram of fat. Both seem to satisfy the burger craving....but I still want to pile them up with lettuce, tomatoes and other burger toppings. Instead I basically eat them plain... not perfect but a start!

My cravings still include greasy pizza, a cheese steak and a bottle of wine! lol. Forget that one glass I want, now I want the whole bottle! I still have not tried alcohol.

Im really glad to hear that one month in and you are doing better. That gives me hope! Thank you!!!!!

Ill keep you posted on how things progress. Please do the same!
Nik
