Drinking and Smoking with Gallbladder Problems.

I recently got back from getting a Barium Upper GI test and I was told that what I thought I had (Hiatal Hernia and Reflux) could very well be my Gallbladder.

My DAILY symptoms are:

Gas (alot of Burping)
Back Pains (sometimes severe, especially when I bend down, under my right shoulder-blade)
Extreme pressure in my chest after eating.
Strange taste in my mouth (when symtoms are at there worst)
Fatigue

I am going back to my doctor to get a referal to a specialists to check out my Gallbladder next week. However I'm just wondering from those with gallbladder problems if they have had the same symptoms.

Also how does smoking and drinking alchohol effect symptoms of Gallbladder issues?

I'm not a big smoker (4 cigs an day on average) or Drinker (about twice a month but when I do I drink alot) but when I do either I notice my symptoms get worse. I also notice my symptoms get worse when I sit alot (like while at work). Anyone have any information for me? Any help is appreciated!

Hi there - as one who has been diagnosed with GERD and also had a inflamed gall bladder removed your symptoms could be either reflux or gall bladder related. Heavy drinking will certainly affect your digestive system aggrevating both gall bladder and reflux. I'm not judging you because I too would tend to only drink occasionally, but to excess when I did. After my GERD worsened requiring surgery (called Nissan fundoplication), I basically had to give up alcohol for good or only have a limited amount. I can no longer vomit due to my fundo surgery, and therefore over-indulgence puts me at high risk for getting sick the next day. In fact, I had an episode of having too much to drink at a party last summer, and spent the next day with dry heaves - no fun!!! But if you've already noticed a worsening of symptoms from drinking why do it to yourself? I basically had to learn the hard way that alcohol is POISON to my system.

I'm also a smoker - like you only 4-5 a day, but smoking can also aggrevate GERD. The symptoms you describe like back pain under the right shoulder blade, gas and fatigue could be gall bladder related. The chest discomfort and funny taste in your mouth could be GERD (those were my primary symptoms), but many times GERD, hiatal hernia, and gall bladder symptoms are very similar. Only your doctor can determine what's going on - or maybe it's all of the above together. My GERD actually got worse after my gall bladder was removed. With my gall bladder, I had significant pain/discomfort up under the right ribs radiating to the back, diarrhea, gas, nausea all the time, weight loss, fatigue and just a general feeling of being ill all the time. Once the GB was removed, my GERD symptoms were primarily heartburn, chest pain, gas, metallic taste in my mouth, throat irritation, hoarse voice, etc.

Keep on getting tested so you can get to the bottom of everything. But do yourself a favor and watch the alcohol intake.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Katie G
