Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

I thought my posting days would be over but tonight I am getting pains like someone is sticking my right ribs with a pin, where the gall bladder was. I had it out 2 months ago. Every now and then it hurts when I lay on either side, sometimes on the right, sometimes in the middle of my tummy.

The part that baffles me is that I have been feeling fine, walking so much and oblivious to the fact that I had this done for the most part but watching my fats. I did have a very oily, large piece of pizza this afternoon but could that cause these sharp pains and if so, why? Has anyone else felt knifelike pains since their gall bladder surgery? If so, when was yours done and how long did it last? The pain is not constant, hurts more when I walk. I keep thinking something is wrong, that a titanium clip that they use to seal the ducts has moved and is sticking me even though I hear this rarely happens. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. I am so sick of this. I did this to feel better and I wonder when I will feel normal.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Hi paula43,

I had mine out 4/20/06 & I was sick as a dog with all kinds of pain--long story, until about 2 weeks ago. Things are now improving for me finally. I still have pinching pain above & below those two incisions over to the right about 2 hours after I eat, but it is getting much less.

I have not had the easy recovery they said it would be which really has frightened me.....enough to send me into severe anxiety & panic attacks which caused me more problems.

Anyway--I say we all respond differently to surgery. You figure they were in there with trocars tugging and pushing around . My biggest fear when the pain continued was thinking I may have bile duct disease or spincter of oddi problems--still can't help but worry a bit about that. But since it is not as bad as it was even a week or two ago I am trying to not worry so much.

Hope you feel better soon. I have read that many people have pain for a year or even 2 later, so hang in there.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Paula 43, I forgot to mention that about 3-4 days ago I came in from the garage & turned to close the door & got a sharp pain that stopped me in my tracks--scared the heck out of me. It was right in the gallbladder area. I stopped & waited a few seconds, but that was it--never came back....so who knows ??? I'll let you know if I get it again !

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

I've been suffering with terrible pain since my surgery 4/13. I've decided it's time to stop comfort eating and see if I can lose the weight I've gained. So, the last 2 days I've had was Grape Nuts cereal with low-fat yogurt, banana, apple and salad with chicken. Day one I had a low-carb raspberry dressing.. I was in ALOT of pain that afternoon. Yesterday NO FAT! In just one day I can see a huge difference. Now, not to be gross, but I also had a major bowel movement so maybe that is why my pain is better. So now it's got me wondering.. is it FAT or CONSTIPATION that is causing the pain where my gall bladder used to be???

It would be very interesting to see what everyone else has to say about the FAT vs. CONSTIPATION gb pain issue.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Thank you so much for replying to everyone! To anxiousinnj, it sounds like I wrote your post, I have the same exact fears and also the panic! I am sure you researched sphinctor of Oddi (I must have read every website by now) and it scares me also. As you know, the test can cause more problems, fixing the duct can cause permanent pain, it just doesn't sound worth it. The best thing to do, just in case this is what we have, is to not eat fats, drink a lot of water and according to one website try to not have stress (easy for them to say!). When I get this pain, I get more stress. I think the stress makes the pain worse, even if it's not a bile duct spasm problem. Let's hope it's not.

As far as the constipation problem, I have diarrhea mostly after fats so my dr. said take Metamucil every day (also advised for Oddi problem) so I should try that. I took it after a bad bout of yellow bile salt diarrhea a few weeks ago and it helped.

Please let me know how you're doing. My pain is mostly about 3 to 4 inches to the right of the navel but higher...between the two incisions but sometimes it's right under my right breast, like 2" below. I hope it's just gas or healing. Gosh, this can make me crazy. Did either of you have stones by the way or just a bad HIDA scan? I had no stones, just a 14% rate on the HIDA.

A pizza after only 2 months? OK, you had to have it. I understand that. But you have to understand you're going to pay the price for doing that. Look, you've got a tiny little bile duct trying to do the work of a big ole gallbladder and you're forcing that stuff thru? Put a straw in a malt. Pinch it closed in the middle then try to suck the malt thru. Do you get the analogy?? Hang in....

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Thank you, Titchou. Can you explain what I am forcing through? Is it the bile...I mean what is happening that's causing the pain? Is it too much bile, too little and what is making it hurt? I read so much but don't understand the physiology of it all as far as the pain from the consumption of fats. Thanks again for your ongoing explanations, you've been a great help!

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

I think eating high amts of fat causes more bile production, but we don't have the galbladder to regulate how it goes thru the duct, thus spasms or perhaps too much bile at once causing the loose bowels that many complain of. I haven't had that....my bowel have been more normal than ever--one good thing from this darned surgery.
Paula I did not have stones--just a poor HIDA @ 20%. Had pain & felt sick all the time--weak, feverish. And yes, I have read & printed out every piece of literature on SOD on the net. I got so sick of it all the other day that I shredded them all hoping that would make all my worries go away !
I am sure constipation may have something to do with the pain---after I have a really good bowel movement I feel great for a few hours....much less pinching and aching in that area.

I pray that we have all just been going through a difficult healing process & nothing more. I had an appt with a gastro specialist @ Mt. Sinai in NY but I canceled it--I was so afraid he would start talking ERCP.

Has anyone else had weight loss & difficulty putting weight back on?
I've lost 30 lbs since last summer--at first it was great, but then when I got so sick with the pain & fever feeling before the surgery it got scary. I went down to 104 lbs. I am on an antidepressant ( long story but the severe anxiety & being treated like a mental case by the docs made me one) & it increases your appetite ( Remeron)--the reason the doc chose that one for me was to help me gain weight. Well, I am eating like a horse--especially bad stuff--sweets, etc.. and have only gained 4-5 lbs since the surgery. Anyone else find that their metabolism is keyed up , not able to gain weight?
Of course with all the internet searching I am worried that something is wrong with my pancreas..........health anxiety is horrible, but the docs drive you to it by not paying attention to your symptoms.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

You are correct about the amount of bile needed to digest the fat. There just isn't enough in the beginning. The duct hasn't caught up with what it's supposed to take over. And forcing it to deal with more fat than it can handle is what's probably causing the pain. Another analogy, it's like a stroke victim trying to relearn things. Other parts of the brain have to take over and it takes a while for that to happen. Give it some time...slowly introduce fat back in. Stop if you have problems. But, hey, I had to have mexican at one point after mine was removed and I knew I'd pay a price for it...and I did. So I didn;t do that again for a while! Good luck!

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

To answer the question a few posts back, I didn't have either of those (stones or HIDA). I was having a tumor removed from my liver. The surgeon said when you have that kind of surgery it's best to take the GB too. I haven't seen anyone on the Liver Disorders board say anything like that though.

Day 3 with no fat.. YIPEEEE! I had mostly discomfort today rather than the extreme pain I've been having.. I still had to hold my stomach while walking.

Wow! I just can't believe that the surgeon never told me to avoid fats!

I'm soooooo glad I found this website, and have all of you to help me.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

The gb produces the bile to digest fats. If it's damaged and not workng properly, it's painful. If it has stones, when it contracts to spew the bile out, that will hurt.

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Titchou? what do you think about "fatty fish" is that gonna hurt too? I was thinking about having catfish for dinner tonight.

I have a question... who wants to slap anyone that says you don't need your gall bladder? LOL

OK, we CAN live without it.. but jeez.. I'm a low-carb kinda girl, this low-fat thing is a whole new world!

I have some friends that have been telling other friends at parties (that just found out about my surgery) when they ask, well what does the gall bladder do? my friends say.. 'you don't need it anymore cuz it was used back in the caveman day when they ate bones.. the gall bladder breaks down bones'.

OMG!! how funny is that???

just goes to show how little understanding people have of what we're going through.......

How ya feeling Paula?

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Hi Corricatt, the pains went away, thank you for asking! I also was curious about fatty fish because I try to eat salmon for the omega 3's...I think I better stay away from that for now and just take the capsules. Or just have a very small amount. I have lost about 5 pounds since my surgery which was 2 months ago. For me this is good, I need to get down another 5 or 10. I do have a fear of getting too thin (that's a first for me!)...just don't want to get diarrhea and get sick. Do yourself a favor, don't have ice cream, maybe I am lactose intolerant or maybe it was the ice cream (lowfat with no artificial fat so that wasn't the culprit)...but 3 weeks ago I had almost a quart of this and had yellow diarrhea like mustard, coming out like water with severe cramps for days. Called doc and he said take Metamucil to bind the bile (this was "bile salt diarrhea"). I never want to go through that again, no food is worth it. I ate very oily pizza 2 days ago and that gave me cramps but not the runs. I really hope we can avoid this by eating lowfat for now and like Titchou says, introduce small amount very slowly over time.

You will find this weird but I bought a portable camping toilet for the car. It's a little pail with a toilet seat, you can put a small garbage bag in it as a liner. heaven knows how I will do this but I can cover myself up with a sheet so nobody sees me through the window and hope the cops don't stop me, LOL. I know this is funny and I hope I made you laugh but you know when the feeling hits you, it's awful and you can't hold it in for one more second..you break out in chills, so I will do anything to avoid this!

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Catfish isn't that fatty...but most people fry it and that makes it fatty. I'd go easy on the salmon too for a while. Everyone is different...it may take you longer than it does someone else to get regulated. But in terms of recovery from other surgeries - heart transplant, for example - it's rather easy. I will occasionally have a bout of "urgency" but I usually know that certain foods can trigger it and just be prepared or not eat that item. You'll figure it out!

Re: Sharp, Sticking Pains After Gall Bladder Removal

Wow, I guess I should not be complaining so much.....I have been eating high caloried. fatty foods right from the beginning...at first my biggest problem was gassy foods. I was told I HAD to eat, eat, eat, as I was down to 104 lbs & really looking sick & frail. That's probably why I had so much pain for the first 2 months...but knock on wood, it is not too bad now. And I don't have the diarreah thing either. I have more gas which cannot be held back & is not pleasant if you catch my drift, so that is always on my mind when out in public places....always looking for where I can go to let one rip..LOL.

Paula, the camping potty is a great idea, funny--yes, but very clever. I mean you have to do what you have to do. I did get a visual on that though with a cop pulling up & you sitting in the back of the car on the crapper....

This makes me wonder about my Mom--she has had trouble with "urgent" bowels for years--always a problem if we went anywhere. Many times we would head out & we would have to come back home. She had her gallbladder out many years ago & I wonder if that was the culprit? She was always told she had IBS, but I wonder....

Not to make you guys jealous, but I went out last night & had chicken cutlets in a marsala gravy, topped with spinach, mozzerlla & peppers along with mashed potatoes........the calorie count sounded like what I needed. After I ate it I thought, oh what have I done , because I was thinking about everyone with the dirreah problems. But I was fine. This morning had fried eggs & a chocolate donut & have had a little "pinching", but nothing that I can't handle. I just hope I'm out of the woods on the pain because that was horrible......and if I end up having to really cut back on fats I dread the thought of more weight loss. Even eating as I have I have only put 5 lbs back on, but that is really with forcing lots of calories. Previous to this gallbladder issue, I would have gained 20 lbs eating as I have--can't figure this out...

Have a great Sunday gallbladder crew !
