Can gallbladder symptoms.....

come and go? I had no idea what could be going on until I talked with a friend today who had her gallbladder removed several years ago. I read some threads on this board and it sounds like if effects everyone differently. I have been burping a lot, have had a lot of indigestion, have had a lot of pain off and on, mostly in the upper part of my abdomen, up into my chest and around by my right shoulder. I also have had a lot of nausea that comes and goes throughout the day but seems more prevelent at night, but no vomiting, though I often feel like I could. Right now I am burping a lot but otherwise feel fine. I am not the type to go to the doctor unless I think I am really sick and I haven't reached that point, but my friend says my symptoms sound like classic gallbladder symptoms. For those of you who have been through this, do they?

TIA!

Nancy

Re: Can gallbladder symptoms.....

Most gallbladder attacks do come and go. Mine were weekly, I had a friend that had attacks less frequently. I felt 100% fine when I was not having an attack.

Most individuals that I know of with constant pain had much worse conditions that were indicitive of infection which you don't want to get to that point and all the more reason to go to the doctor now.

Burping, indigestion and pain in the chest don't sound like gallbladder. Gallbladder is typically a lower pain in the rib cage just below the chest. The pain can then radiate to the shoulder and back.

Go to the doctor. Pain in the chest no matter what is on the list of warning signs you should never ignore.

Best of luck

Lori

It can. My doc was a little puzzled in my case cause I had nausea without eating. I just felt sick all day, no pain at all just not hungry, nauseous and depressed. When my GB was taken out, it was diseased. Within the past couple of years, I probably had GB problems, but I never knew. I had chest pain, indigestion, heartburn and especially diarrhea after eating. So to answer your question, I strongly believe if you GB gets really bad, it can make you real sick.

Re: Can gallbladder symptoms.....

I don't know if the symptoms I'm having are gb related or not, but I have definitely had indigestion, pain underneath the breastbone, belching, etc. One of the sites I read, medline plus, said that these were possilbe symptoms of gb disease. I have had little to no nausea and no diarrhea though. I havent' seen diarrhea listed as a symptom of gb disease in any of the sites I've looked at, but I hear that everyone presents differently though. I just had a HIDA scan that showed delayed gb emptying, but my doc doesn't believe my symptoms are gb related, so he said it's of little significance. Who knows? I exchanged posts with someone on these boards who said that her doctor believed she had gastritis and gave her PPIs-- she finally got a new doc who thought it might be her gb and her HIDA scan was very low and she had her gb removed-- and is now fine. So I guess the bottom line is to leave no stone unturned and at least have whatever gb tests you can....good luck!

Re: Can gallbladder symptoms.....

BioAdoptMom3, yes gallbladder symptoms can come and go, I even had some that disappeared after awhile. For the most part though the symptoms get worse over time, unless you pass the stones or get them dissolved. The symptoms you describe are indeed the classic ones.

You also read on this board about those that have attacks of extreme pain, these are most likely caused when they are passing stones out of the gallbladder through the billiary ducts. It can be very painful and very dangerous if the stone becomes lodged in the duct.
