I had my gallbladder removed on Thursday, July 2 and the surgeon told my husband that my liver started bleeding during the surgery. I was told to be very careful and not reach or stretch too far and do nothing strenous or it might start bleeding again.
Is this common? Has anybody else had this happen to them? I'm nervous about how long it will take my liver to heal. It's funny, I'm not even worried about the gallbladder removal, only my liver. (That's an organ that I can't live without).
If anybody has had a similar experience, please share your story.
I don't remember them telling my husband that they cauterized mine. He just said he got it to stop but to be extra careful not to make it bleed again.
How am I supposed to know if it starts bleeding again? I'm already bloated and have soreness....
Bloating and being sore is normal for post surgery. Maybe you should call the surgeon's office and ask them specifically what you are supposed to do. I was told (and I've read) that it is typical to cauterize during the surgery.
Thanks Zoe. I have a call in to the doctor already and am waiting for them to call me back. I asked my husband if he said that he cauterized my liver and he said that he was told that they just packed it with gauze during the surgery and it stopped bleeding by the time they were done and ready to close.
I know that bloating and soreness is normal, that's why I said that if I was to start bleeding again, I wouldn't know. As far as the surgery and recovery, I'm doing great. I'm just afraid to do anything that would start my liver bleeding again. I had a hysterectomy last June and was on the elliptical doing a 45 minute workout on day 3. This time, I'm afraid to do anything other than a slow walk because I don't want to bleed again.
I'll let you now what the doctor says. Thanks again for your response.
I just had my gallbladder out yesterday and I also had a liver bleed- they put a drain in my right side and I had to stay over night. I was told I have fatty liver disorder and that is why mine bled. I am very very sore where the drain was, but the incisions from the gallbladder removal are not to bad- I am just taking it easy and hopefully everything will heal the way it should. God Bless!!
