Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

I was diagnosed with Bile Reflux in July 2009. My endoscopy results showed there was bile pool in my stomach. Two biopsies were taken from my duodonum and my stomach apiece, and a histopathological examination showed there was H.pylori colonization and chronic gatritis. My doc. only gave me domperidone for about six weeks and I felt no change in my symptoms. My major symptoms are, constant feeling of fullness, bloated tummy, burns in my upper abdomen, stomach upset, stomach noise and visiting the toilet quite frequently (feces is semi-solid; no diarrhoea).

Two and a half months later, i.e. in September, I was diagnosed with Major Depression after my girlfriend broke up with me. I saw the psychiatric and I was give paroxetine which did not work for me. It was changed to armitriptylin and that did not work out for me as well so I decided to use psychotherapy to treat my depression, which I'm doing quite well.

Prior to my being diagnosed with the bile reflux and the major depression, I had being under stress (resulting from a stressful relationship) for quite some time - about 7months, which probably threw me into some kind of anxiety.

Also, from what I've read from the internet, almost everyone with bile reflux has had it as a result of some gall bladder surgery. Now I have not had any surgery before, so I'm wondering what is the cause of my bile reflux. Is it related to my stress/depression? Some people are also trying to relate bile reflux to anxiety disorder? If it's the anxiety disorder/depression which caused this, how can I stop it? I don't know how to tackle this whole problem. Now the strange stuffs I'm reading about the bile reflux is even worsening my depression. I really need somebody to tell me how I can attack this bile reflux... Does it mean if I get anti-depressants to deal with the depression, the bile reflux will also stop? I was reading about some CCK antagonists stuff on the internet as well. The author is trying to link bile production with this CCK... I don't really know... Somebody please help me. I'm virtually seeing no doctor now, because they seem not to be in the position to help me - thank God for the internet - I'm really desperate and depressed.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

The med. the doc gave you, was that an antiobiotic? I read that the pylori is the most common cause of what I have, a peptic ulcer, but your symptoms sound just like mine. I also have the full feeling high in my stomach, slight aching sometimes, some foods bother me, some don't, and more symptoms at night than during the day, running to the bathroom after eating one, and not another. I went to the internal med doc just yesterday for a follow up visit ( long story, I was in er with what I thought was my heart, but was my stomach ). Doc in er said I had acid reflux, put me on prilosec once a day, told me to follow up with my regular doc. It didnt make sense to me because I barely had any of the symptoms of acid reflux. the med helped immensely at first, then I started having problems again, I feel full alot. I had my gall bladder out years ago so I knew that wasnt it. The internal med. doc looked at all my numerous records and tests ( heart monitors, EKG's ) and palpated my stomach where I seem to have the problem all the time and said he is sure I have a peptic ulcer. He put me on the same med but twice a day and maalox if I have a problem in between. I then had to stay away from certain foods. This is helping me quite a bit. In the meantime I am going for a scope ( I will be knocked out ) as the doc left it up to me to decide if I wanted one as he is sure its an ulcer. I said yes if I am asleep because I wanted to know for sure. Anyway, your symptoms sound so familiar to mine. The prilosec is really helping me, and changing what I eat and drink. I was also under a tremendous amount of stress before this, yet now they are claiming stress doesnt cause ulcers. I never in my life had a stomach problem before this though, so it makes you wonder.

Kasey, the med the doc. gave me was a prokinetic. I think he gave me a triple therapy as well (amoxycillin, omeprazole and flaggyl), with an antacid, which did not help.

For you, the scope will best tell whether you have ulcers or not so I recommend you get it. It will also show if you have any bile in your stomach, then you could be put on the right treatment.

People who have their gall bladders removed normally have bile reflux, so I'm sure yours might be bile reflux (let's pray it's not, because it's difficult to treat) If it's bile reflux but it's misdiagnosed as ulcer or acid reflux, then the treatment being given might not help - might actually worsen your condition. So it's good you get the scope.

Keep me updated and let's see how we could fix the probs. All the best and God be with you.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Thankyou for your reply. Kingdigy. Are you near a mayo clinic at all or seeing an internal med. doc? If not, could you get a referral to one or a second opinion? I will also do some research for you. I research my own symptoms also and have learned ( like you have ) I like to know what is going on with me and what it may be and how I can help myself. That's how I figured out the acid reflux I was first diagnosed with didn't sound right because my symptoms were different. I will come back after I find any new info. to help you.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Hi again, I did a quick search on the mayo site and you may want to check that out. It says the most common cause as you know is some type of previous surgery, but the next common cause is a valve that is not closing right. It sounds like your symptoms are daily with no improvement, so I really hope you go back, to an internal medicine doc for a 2nd opinion, or to a mayo clinic of possible. You should not have to put up with those symptoms daily. It's terrible and can easily throw a person into depression, like we don't have enough to deal with anyway. Weird how medical problems come on after stress yet they are supposedly not caused by stress. From what I read, the doctor did treat your condition the way it is normally treated at first, but it says when this doesn't help, you need to go back. BTW, if you end up having to have surgery, I will be here for you. I have had many, and they have helped me immensely. I had back surgery for a herniation, had my gall bladder out, tubes tied, wrist surgery, so I'm a surgery expert LOL! Depending on your insurance, you can either ask to be referred to a specialist, or call one yourself. Please keep me updated. I want to know how you are doing.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Kasey, thank you so much for replying to my thread as well.
Hmm! I live and work in Ghana, West Africa and access to good healthcare facilities and drugs is even a problem. The wealthy ones out here fly to the U.S. and other countries for proper healthcare and surgical operations. I only saw the Mayo clinic you are talking about on the internet when I was researching about my condition. There's nothing like that in Ghana, and these are some of the reasons that make my situation so bad. Patient-to-doctor ratio is very bad in Ghana and so the docs. don't really have the patience and time to really examine patients. It takes me a 5-hour drive to see the doc. When I did the histopathological examination, it took about 4 to 5 weeks before the results came, because there are about only two or three histopathological centres in the whole of the country and so there's a huge queue of samples waiting to be examined.

I asked the doc what might have caused my bile reflux and he did have nothing to say. Is it that my pyloric valve is weak or I'm rather producing too much bile. I'm only 28 and don't expect my pyloric valve to be weak; in any case, I think it will just be helpful for me to know what caused it. Once mine is not gall bladder removal, may be it must be handled differently or may be it could even be cured. I don't really know what is happening and there's virtually no one out here to help me. I'm always on the internet, trying to get some useful info. which will help me. Trust me, even internet access is a problem for about 75% of Ghanaians - it's a pity my brother.

Have you had your endoscopy yet?

I would very much appreciate your reply.
Thanks and God bless you.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Hello, I am sorry it is so hard to get health care where you are located, it must be very frustrating. I am not scheduled for endoscopy untill Dec. 8th. The internal med. doc said it is not acid reflux, but he is positive it is a peptic ulcer, so he left it up to me to decide if I wanted an endoscopy, but I do want to make sure. I am doing better with taking the meds twice a day rather than once, and watching my diet, but I do still have a few symptoms here and there, which is common I guess with an ulcer, as it can take 6 weeks or so to heal. When I am on here again, I will do some more research for you. Did the doc ever suggest a different diet for you? And do you mean to say he couldnt tell you where the bile was coming from? Because the source of where it was coming from, would also help with the cure. Thankyou for replying to me.

I had my gallbladder removed a year ago and have problems with digestion. I have belching and bloating - I don't know if anxiety and stress is causing it.

Gigi, are you so much stressed? I think anxiety and stress cause digestive problems but the best thing to do first is to see a doc.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Kasey, I'm glad you are doing fine and I pray you get more and more better. But I am still of the view that you do the endoscopy so you can know exactly what's wrong with you. If you have ulcers, it will be revealed in the endoscopy and you can be sure what you are treating. The doc. did not tell me what to eat and what not to eat; I'm virtually in the dark! Anyway thanks so much for your concern. Just keep me updated... All the best

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Gigi, I was told to stay away from certain things after I had my gallbladder out, but only after I started having problems with digestion. It takes our bodies awhile to get used to not having our gallbladder which is for digestion, so it makes sense to have symptoms when it is gone. The symptoms can last for months but did eventually go away. I had to stay away from dairy products, animal fat, spices etc ( anything that I loved LOL! ) and slowly add them back in when I felt better. It was really just a low fat healthy diet. I could eat meat that was very lean, or cut the fat cut off, and I remember I lost weight too, I should be eating that way right now! So you might try switching to a very low fat diet with no fried foods, no grease, no spices, and cut out dairy and this will probably make a huge dif. in your symptoms. It would be a bland diet but wouldnt be forever. Good luck to you.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Kingdigy, thankyou for replying. I am having the scope done on the 8th. I do want to make sure I am being diagnosed and treated properly for my condition. I do still have a few symptoms and must watch what I eat all the time so it's a balancing act. Did the docs ever suggest a certain diet to you? I am sure you have done as much research as you can but I am still going to try for you as I know you work and are still looking for any way you can help yourself.

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Kasey, doc. suggested no diet for me. I'm just in the dark now, taking no drugs and knowing not what to do, with my symptoms getting worse. I learnt about carafate welchol and questran powder from the net, which might possibly give me some relief but I've tried combing all the pharmacies in Ghana and nobody so far seems to have even heard the names of these drugs before. Kasey, it's a day-to-day struggle and whenever I wake up, I wonder how I'm gonna make it through the day... It's that bad... Wish you all the best!

Re: Bile pool in stomach with no gall bladder surgery... Help!!!

Kingdigy, I do hope you can find a doctor who can help you. Could you go back to your doctor and let him know your symptoms are worse and you need something done now?
I had appt. with the doc last night and he suggested I put off the scope, which I was thinking about doing anyway. Since being put on the prilosec twice a day, I am much better and have only occasional symptoms. He said the scope is not warranted right now, and if my symptoms get worse etc., I can always call and schedule one. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for my ulcer to heal. I also have other appointments I am going to so sorry I am not on here as much lately.

Kasey, I'm happy you are getting better. I'm also happy it's ulcer because that will definitely heal. Just keep on taking your drugs. I called my doc. about three days ago and he said he's gonna refer me to another GI specialist. Like I said, it takes me about 5 hours to drive to the hospital and I'm so busy with my work schedule so I'll try and make time next week and go to him. I pray I'll get better. Keep in touch
