Unhappy Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

I had my gallbladder removed in September 2009. I hadn't any of the symptoms that friends say they had when I found out that I had gallstones. I just had a nagging pain in right side. I had an ultrasound and they said I had gallstones. Well I had the surgery which was uneventful. I had loose bowel movements for about the first three weeks, and my bowel movement returned to normal. Maybe every two to three days. Which is always been how my bowel movements were. After the surgery I noticed the pain did not leave in my right side. Doctor told me to give it time my body is still adjusting to the surgery. Well it is now three months later and the pain is getting worse, from hurting a couple times a week to now hurting constantly all day, I did go back to the doctor and he order a CT scan of my abdomen. He called and said everything was good. In the mean time he prescribed Welchol, two after each meal. Which to help, but only temporrily. Am I to have this pain the rest of my life? If anyone has had this problem please inform me on what you did to ease the symptooms, I don't want to have to take Welchol for the rest of my life. I need help fast.

Well everyone is different. I have the same pain you described since September 2008 which is when I had my surgery. I saw a gasterologist and had a hployria test, mrcp xray to check to see if any stones, endoscopy (which they found mild gastritis), and I even had a colonscopy to see if I had IBS. Well the gasterologist ended up thinking I was crazy for the pains I described to him. Bottom line you really have to get a doctor who is experienced with Gallbladder removal side effects because most doctors don't know and think you will be automatically fine after they remove it.

So after doing all my research online for several months - I am on Welchol too. I get constipated one day and diarreahea another day without Welchol. You need to keep a food diary to see what food might trigger the pain. I get nausea, belching, and the right upper pain under the rib. It brought back my anxiety. Anxiety and stress can make it worse because your bile will secret more from your liver. Your liver is working twice as hard. I go to acupuncturist every other week which has helped. So it could be Sphinctor of the Oddi Dysfunction, gastritis (from all the bile), or the syndrome (I can't remember the name of the syndrome). Now I have a new symptom neck and shoulder pain. My whole digestive system is messed up from having the gallbladder removed.

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

Hi

Thank you for your reply. I still haven't found any relief. The pain is constantly there. I have went to the emergency room, and they still can't find out what is wrong. They know that I am in pain because my blood pressure be off the roof, until they give me a pain shot then it gradually goes down. But i have now been prescribed aciphex, which if I take in the morning, i manage to stay (mostly) pain free. God forbid if i forget to take it. I am in pain for the next 3-5 days before i get relief. I don't know what else to do i have had several tests since, they can't find anything. I hope that you have found some relief.

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

hey i had my gallbladder removed in1999, i have the sharp pain from time to time. i went back to gasto Dr.and he did ultrasound nothing there. he is a close personal family friend so i feel very confident in his opinion. i also had a stone that was loged in my bile duct, this all occure dwhile i was pregnant. i had my child a month early inorder to have the 2 surgerys to remove the stone, and gallbladder. i keep chronic diahrrea, which has turned into IBS. i take med. for this. the constant pain you talked about i dont have, mine comes and goes! i had no choice but to have the surgery, it almost caused me to die! i even had jaundice. i dont regret it! ive just learned to live w/it. he has put me on 5 small meals a day & diet high in fiber, no caffeine. it has helped, havent had side pain that i remeber since! but remember everyone is different! good luck!!

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

i had my gb out in dec 2007 after having some horrendous gb attacks. gb was full of stones and chronically inflamed. i was also found to have adhesions. everything was great for about 5 weeks then started getting right sided pain under ribs, similar to gb attacks, but they don't last as long but are more frequent 2-3 times a week. i'm usually woken up by them. occasionally i will get a couple of weeks respite, which is great and how i would prefer to live. i have had every test going for gastric problems and everything has come back normal. the docs have pretty much dismissed me from their care now with no treatment. it looks like i'm going to have to live with the pains, easier said than done. does this sound like sphincter of odi dysfunction, the surgeon did suggest that it could be bile duct spasms, but no treatment has been offered or suggested. had another very painful attack early this morning, is starting to get me down knowing that i'm stuck like this. here's hoping we all get an answer soon.

I am seeing a liver specialist first and then a Sphinctor of the oddi dysfunction doctor. I too was told there is nothing else we can do for you at the last gastro doctor i visited - basically I want some answers. I know the pain you describe I had it today. I was fine this morning and then this afternoon after my lunch the pain started in the right rib area. It does get you down and then you get mad. I feel like my life is taken away from me.

What do adhesions feel like?

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

i wish i could answer that question for you but i was unaware that i had adhesions. i was told that they were probably caused by the inflamation of the gall bladder. i do wonder however if there is scarring of the bile ducts that is causing the pain i get now.

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

So I went to the liver specialist yesterday from a well renowned hospital - I explained all my pains. He told me my right rib pain is caused from my fatty liver because my liver will swell and this will cause pain (not to the liver but it rubs against other organs causing pain). So I have to get a blood test to rule out hepititas A or B. Then I get xray to check my bile ducts for Sphinctor of oddi. He says he doubts very seriously it is sphinctor. He asked me if I eat alot of fruit and I said "Yes" and then he asked if I eat too fast and I said "yes" -- fruit causes tons of gas and eating too fast forces air down which causes lots of belching. I was swallowing too much air he said. I don't know if this theory is true because my gastro doctor try to tell me that. So when I ate my dinner I ate really small bites and I ate very slowly - and guess what no belching. I was eating tons of fruit because I can't eat salads or other certain foods because of my acid reflux. I noticed too that when I left the doctors I felt I was in good hands. My mind was finally getting some answers and I was at peace. Don't know if this is a placebo effect but my stomach was quiet the whole evening. My mind was so consumed with "what if's" that I don't know if I was making the pain on my own because of anxiety. I do have to lose weight to get rid of the fatty liver which I have been doing.

this is even a nightmare trying to express my thoughts and awareness to this gallbladder removal..lap chol. procedure...had a long written response..phone rang and came back only to not find it again..so, this is a follow up and not as extensive for now..had surgery for removal late aug.09..was planning on going east for the holidays..never made it and still haven't due to this miserable burning and all the bloating /extended pressure.in the right quad..have also had the sphincter ducts fillet'd above the pancreas.3 months ago in a week long gammit of all they could do...tests /procedures..and your fine...well..was in a care facility for 5 weeks until two weeks ago...they at least had me where i would find comfort for a bout 24-36..being the longest spans w/o symptoms....did my dilaudid phaseout for the couple weeks and knew that was not the remedy for a long battle with figureing this out...it seemed like an easy thing at the time especially being a two time back surg....including fusion/hardware/..cervical as well with hardware...this followed a removal of a brain tumor all within the first 4.5-5 yrs of this decades..thought after i kicked opiate addiction (oxycontin)..200m a day..5month clean up...after being told ibs was the issue and .yadayada...found the way...bufro..injections reducing down along with LTRYPTOPHAN..and heavy doses of amino acids well lets just say i was somewhat myself...lol...mentally over the physical side..so many meds ..and i mean so many later ...shingles included and then the assessment of a bit of bi-polar disorder..oh,really...paxil cr .37.5 2tw day for the last 7-8 yrs...and thats it's own misery ...of even attempting to get off of...SO, i guess with what i'm saying is the body will take a lot but this even has me questioning the relief factor /...have had some with after whatever i eat ..a table spoon to two table sp.(organic apple cider vinegar/with bile salt type vitami/add witha quarter glass of water..)..some relief gave me a light at least...well i'm two weeks from the last visit with the GI...my reg dr. and i know it's adjusting the thermostat(gallbladder)..to kewling my engine again....how?...w/o the thermostat...well,i'm willing and very determined to not stay with this type of daily torture..i know it's definately the issue even thou they have tryed to sway my thinking away from the surgery....OK...i'm a big boy past the half century mark but dont tell me things that don't make sense..the specialist i mean.....my conclusion after about ..ohh 8 months post op...when they inflated me with the car.diox...maybe they stretched areas inside that tore and haven,t healed(properly)..or mabe ther is a small ...small..bout with too much bile or too little..one being too loose of a stool and the other being constipation of sorts... it's finding that regiment to ease the bowel/colon area and surrounding tissue..along with the petro(food) we put in our tank..../limit stress....yah...sure..lol....we are all torn up/stretch to the max.....i'm with the program and it's a 80 yrd. field now..instead of 100.since i seem to know it's a personal and team effort of sampling certain patterns at lenght that give some semblance of normalcy that use to be..battling ..and will let anyone know if something simply helps...for now..sam

Re: Pain in ight side after gallbladder surgery

I have tried several things to stop the pain, school is almost out, so I have the summer to try to find out what is going on, different diet, something, i don't know. but what i am going to really look into, that they had told me in the emergency room that it is probably scar tissue, if that is the case, then why do the aciphex gives me minor relief, pain pills really don't do any good.
