Unhappy Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

Sorry if this post is long but I am desperate and need some help/advice or whatever I can get. I am a 35 year old mom of 4 young kids and for the past year I have been on and off getting sick. It started in October of 2009 when I spent a week where I was nasueated, weak, tired, and thirsty and my stomach souding like it "had aliens in it", according to my children. At first I thought it was just a stomach flue but after that most days I would just feel unwell. My stomach would just be nasueated and gurgling. And then it seemed every 4 - 6 weeks I would get that sickness again. Weak, tired, thirsty, aliens in the stomach and it would last from 7 - 10 days. When it passes I feel great. My mother in law took me to the hospital one night cause I was just so weak and all my blood tests came back normal and they said it was just the flue. I ended up going to my doctor who sent me for blood tests and again everything was fine. He then thought my gall bladder wasn't funcionting properly so he sent me for an ultrasound where everything came back normal. Then he sent me for a HIDA scan, also normal. Then they started thinking maybe it's an ulcer. Sent me for those scans, normal. In May 2010 they did a scope of my stomach and tested me for H.Pylori..the H.Pylori also came back negative. From the scope they said I had quite a bit of sludge in my stomach which shouldn't be there as well as irritation of the stomach lining and esophagus. They gave me 2 medications to take..one for stomach acidity and one to coat my stomach. During the summer it was on and off. Most days I had some reaction after eating, In August I started getting sharp chest pains and pain in my side but it didn't last. At the beginning of September I ended up having a bit of a melt down..My dad had cancer in the summer and had to have a quarter of his only remaining kidney removed, I was stressed with being ill and I had had some anxiety attacks over the summer. Anyway they put me on celexa which I have had taken in the past due to post partum depression. I was really trying to stay off it by seeing a naturopath and everything but in the end it's the only thing that helped. Anyway the last few months I have been waiting to see a specialist but in the meantime I am continuing to get sick. In fact as I am typing now I feel like I have bad acid indigestion, I'm weak, tired and nasueated. Even when I dont' eat I have nasuea! I am annoyed!! I have heard that all the tests can come back normal and yet it still is your gall bladder? My mom and my mother in law are convinced that is what the problem is but I dont' know. I have a dull pain sometimes under my right rib cage but nothing significant. I am desperate. Has anyone been expierencing any of this?? It is really hard to deal with and I am getting depressed.
Thanks For Listening.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

I had all the same symptoms and went to doctor a few times and all was "normal". Finally I had a nurse practitioner suggest I get my gallbladder checked out. I had a ct scan done and they found that I had gall stones, and kidney stones. They wanted to take the gall stones out first and then the kindney stones. When they went in to remove the gall stones they found that my gall bladder was completely mush and not much of it was left, and in beginning stages of gain green. Insist on a CT scan. Doctors miss stuff all the time. By the way, when the doctor that was taking the kidney stones out looked at the scan cd he didn't even see the gall stones. I knew they were there because the tech told me the day I had the scan done. He had to go back and look at it again. After the removal of the gall bladder I had nothing but problems with my stomach. I spent the next two years staying close to a restroom everytime I ate. I have found that drinking yogurt based strawberry/banana smoothies ( I buy the ones from McDonald's every morning now) has helped more than anything.

Thank you for your response. So how come you were still having stomach problems after they removed your gall bladder? It didn't make it better? I was thinking of paying to go have a CT scan done cause the wait is ridiculous. Just waiting to see what the specialist says..if I ever get an appointment there that is. Did you get sick like I do? I hope you feel better now?? So frustrating...

The gall bladder controls bile. When it is removed your body tries to make up for it. I'm not a doctor so I might not be able to explain it very well. After it was removed if I took one bite of anything I would be off to the bathroom. I went back to the doctor and they said they had never heard of that happening. I looked on the internet and found many cases where people were having the same thing. The doctor gave me different types of meds to try to control it but nothing worked. I have had to re-adjust my life around stomach problems after having my gall bladder removed. When McDonald's came out with their new smoothies I tried one for breakfast. The rest of the day I didn't have an upset stomach. It was amazing to have one day that I didn't go through the horror. I went the next morning to get another one just to see if it had anything to do with making me feel better. No problems again that day. So, over the past few months I have had a strawberry/banana smoothie from McD's every single morning except a couple of times due to weather. Those couple of days the problems came back. I found that it was the yogurt that was helping me. I tried regular yogurt and it tasted bad so I continued with the smoothies. I know all of this is stuff related to post gall bladder surgery but you need to research it all so that you are ready for however it may affect you. If at all possible get a scan and have a good doctor review it. I hope you feel better.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

It is helpful after gb removal to eat no fat for 2-3 weeks to give the bile duct time to "come online", so to speak. Trying to eat normally right afterwards can overtax it and then you will have trouble from then on. My surgeon said his rate for that was about 1% of his patients.

You are lucky you had a good surgeon. Mine told me to "eat whatever I wanted now". She was wrong. It does make sense to take it easy on the fat for the first few weeks. When I went back and told them I was having problems they had no suggestions for me and looked at me like I was stupid and making it up.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

I am not even 100% sure it is my gall bladder...The one problem they did see when I had my scope was my stomach had "sludge" left in it from the night before which they said should not have been there. I am just frustrated like everyone else. I just can't stand the constant stomach nasuea and turning it does and then when I get sick it is brutal....7 - 10 days of just being exhausted and weak and tired and my stomach is brutal...I am anxious to see the specialist and trying to stay positive while I wait. It is just hard when most of the tests are coming back negative.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

The nausea, feeling week for days, and anxiety were all symptoms that I had as well. I seriously thought I was going to die alone (my husband is deployed). Trying to take care of my two elementary age children, work full-time, and keep up with the house while feeling bad was horrible.

I had no gallstones but a HIDA scan did show that my gallbladder function was at 16%. I was told that normal function is 35 to 100%.

I had my gallbladder out 12/16/10. It was my first surgery ever. The surgery went well. I was tender for the first week and tired easily. Keep in mind, I am a healthy 38 year old female.

On day 9 after the surgery I developed almost continual chest pressure. I didn't know what was going on. It was Christmas eve and I drove up to the emergency room, but talked myself out of going in. I suffered with it for about a week before I finally thought to look online to see if others felt the same. Turns out there were plenty of people that have similar symptoms. I started walking on the treadmill on day 13 after the surgery. That day I only felt comfortable walking .2 miles. The next day I walked .5 miles. The next day I walked a full mile. Since then the discomfort is very, very minimal.

I don't know if it was gas still trapped in my body, or indigestion or just my body needing time to acclimate, but I feel almost completely myself. And I do finally feel like the surgery was a good thing. The middle of my body does not ache/burn anymore. I am on day 17 since the surgery and I feel like it was a good thing and it will only get better.

Also, antacids help the discomfort. Sometimes I have to take 4, but they do help.

My doctor told me to eat low fat for a couple of weeks, but my husband who came home for the surgery cooked whatever he wanted. I can't complain, he's cooking, right? But that may have contributed to my discomfort after surgery.

I just ate a yogurt cup and I'm again reaching for the antacids. Some people have posted it took months for them to feel back to normal. And a couple of ladies I work with have the diarrhea problem after they eat lunch. This is years later.

I truly hope they find out what is wrong with you. Best Wishes.

Well, yes, you could complain to your husband. I know having home was a treat and a great blessing, but you can just not eat what he fixes. Plain turkey or chicken sandwiches, potatoes, yogurt, plain veggies...just eat that and let the others eat what they want. You really need to stay no fat for a while. It will help.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

My 16 year old daughter has had constant stomach pains for about 6 months now. Vomiting upset stomach all the time. They are sending her for an ultra sound and hida scan on monday. They are thinking its her gall bladder she is so tired of being in pain and sick, the other day when she vomited it was Yellow about the color of the smiley faces and she hadn't had anything to drink or eat but a sip of water. I hope they find out what is wrong.. dr is thinking its her gall bladder.

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

I have been feeling no so good for over three years and blamed it on my hiatal hernia. Until three weeks ago I asked my doctor to send me for a abdominal ultrasound.
It came back mulitple gallstones.
My daughter age 22 just had hers removed and she had way different symptoms than I do, she was vomitting, bad pain in right upper stomach that she was hunched over miserable pain.
Me on the other hand no matter what I eat I get swollen stomach (disstension), upset stomach feeling, gas bloating, indigestion, upper chest pain, back pain, shoulder pain.
I have surgery scheduled for 3/25/11. I have been eating fairly good no fatty foods, chicken, rice, lowfat cottage cheese, soup, crackers well tonight I ate a pice of very fatty yummy cheddar/mozzarella string cheese and 3 crackers I got a sharp pain in my rest chest muscle and back like maybe 2 inches from my rib cage on right radiated into back.
I took 4 gaviscon thinking this was hiatal hernia/heartburn. It hurt more when I took deep breaths. Scared the crap out of me.
I get dizzy but not spnning dizzy just like my heads not right and tired all the time.
all other tests ekg, heart stress tests, blood work all good other than gallstones.
anyone else feel like I do and gallbladder removal helped

thanks

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

All those are symptoms of gallbladder problems - yours and your daughter's. Be glad you are getting it out. Good luck! You'll do fine...

Re: Gall Bladder Questions, Desperate!

For me, and a lot of other people, it is a really easy surgery. I had lap and jogged 2 miles a week after. Eat fat free for the first 3 weeks or so and then go easy on the fat for a while. You'll be fine.
